SMUMN is a small school in a small town ... like really small school. No, it's not the Saint Mary's in Indiana; it's the other Saint Mary's in small town Winona, Minnesota. Our pride and joy is the one and only John McDonough, the president and CEO of the Chicago Blackhawks. At SMU, you learn quickly that you have to make your own fun because there are very minimal activities in town, like going for a hike through the bluffs or a walk around the lake. But SMU is really one of a kind. Here are 10 signs you go to SMUMN and love every minute of it:

1. You've gone for a hike up to "the rock" (or you at least know what it is).

Hardest hike of your college career, but the view is definitely worth it.

2. You know who "Campus Safety Don" is and have befriended that kind, gentle soul.

Donny is the just best. No question.

3. You've suffered the fight after flight of stairs up to fourth floor Mary's.

Longest 45 seconds of your whole life. You are sweaty, full of regret and your teacher even commented on how winded you are in front of the whole class.

4. You get overwhelmingly excited when there are corn dogs or chicken nuggets in the caf.

Finally! Something edible!

5. Towny Tour is your favorite holiday.

12 hours of meeting new people, Kwik Trip corn dogs, playing football in the streets and making memories.

6. You have been to the Rubio’s truck outside Gabby’s.

Best quesadilla or burrito you will ever eat in Winona at 1:30 a.m.

7. You have no idea what the Ek Family Village or Residencia Santiago Miller are, but you know the Old and the New.

And you didn't find out that the Old and New weren't the real names of these housing villages until your sophomore or junior year at SMU.

8. You LOVE going to baseball games in the spring.

Nothing better than sun, baseball and great times with great friends … except maybe the occasional night game at Winona State.

9. You have no idea who Christopher Kendall is, but you get 50+ emails from him a day.

So. Many. Emails. We get it, okay? There's an internship panel today.

10. Getting a hug from Alice makes your week.

There is nothing better than getting a hug from that sweet woman when you're having a rough day.

Saint Mary's University of Minnesota may not be the biggest or best school in the MIAC (or even Winona ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ) but the friends we meet and memories we make here are incomparable.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
