Music: it is much more than just a digital file. It is emotion, joy, culture and life. No, I’m not talking about the overplayed pop song you hear on the radio three times a day. I’m talking about the good kind of music. The kind that makes you dance around your room and sing at the top of your lungs. Music produces a kind of pleasure that you simply cannot do without. If you are able to relate to any of these, you’re probably obsessed with music:
1. You are constantly listening
From the second you wake up your music is playing. You wake up every morning to the sound of a song. You listen while you’re getting ready for class. You listen on your way to class. You listen while you do your work. You listen in the shower. It literally never ends. It fills every void in your day.
2. When you can’t listen, you’re probably humming a song that’s stuck in your head
And it’s usually the last song you listened to before you had to turn it off. And you’ll probably be humming it until you get a hold of your music again. You sing it enough to get it stuck in the heads of the people you’re around. Oops.
3. You spend entirely too much money on concert tickets
It’s to the point where you spend almost an entire paycheck on one ticket. People end up not wanting to go with you because they aren’t willing to spend as much as you. Not to mention you willingly spend an exorbitant amount of money to go to music festivals even though you know that you won’t see a shower, a running bathroom, or air conditioning for four days. And the worst part: it doesn’t bother you because you know it’ll be worth it.
4. When someone asks you your favorite song, you refuse to answer
*Long pause. Slight panic. No response* Out of the thousands of songs that you’ve listened to and fell in love with, how are you expected to pick just one? Now that’s just impossible.
5. Your music library is upwards of 3000 songs and it’s extremely eclectic
From Brand New to Justin Bieber. From Hall & Oates to Cage the Elephant. Your taste in music has an extremely wide range and sometimes it shocks you when you pay attention to all the different genres you listen to. Yet you still want to expand your music library with different genres.
6. You get annoyed with people who try to have a conversation with you while your music is playing
Shhhh. You’re trying to listen to a great song and someone is being rude and interrupting. Your way out of this is to not actually listen and just yes everyone to death. All you want to do is put your hand over their mouth so they stop talking.
7. You think about the music that will be played at your wedding
When most people think of weddings, they think of what dress they’ll wear or what flowers they’ll have in their bouquet, but not you. You think of what songs will be played. Do you want a DJ or live band? What song will you dance to?
8. You listen to music on different platforms
People constantly ask you why you have "Sigh No More"digitally, on a CD, and on vinyl. You explain that it sounds different on each platform and justify that you can’t listen to vinyl on the go and your car only has a CD player. You need options.
9. You have a playlist for every possible occasion
Shower playlists are a norm for most, but you have much more than that. A playlist for when you’re sad, a playlist for when you’re happy, a playlist for when you need a reminder that you’re great, a playlist that your parents won’t hate when you play your music in the car, etc. The list goes on.
10. Finding new music is like finding treasure
You get so excited about it so naturally you listen to the song on repeat (30x a day) without shame. The only dilemma you face with finding new music is deciding whether to keep it your little secret or share it with everyone you know.
