Although "mid-college crisis" is not an official term, I think it perfectly describes the feeling of looking ahead at the tremendous responsibilities the future brings and simultaneously wanting to run back into your pre-school years. It's like this: you have a million and one things you want to do before you turn 25, but instead of traveling the world you've been re-reading the same sentence in your history textbook for 10 minutes. If you're experiencing this, trust me, you're not alone. Here are a few signs that you're going through a mid-college crisis:
1. Going to class feels like an interruption in the plans you had for the day.
At some point, you seem to have forgotten that getting an education is the whole reason you're in college in the first place. Your social life starts feeling more important than class. How 'bout the whole college thing, just without the school part?
2. You have a lot of sudden urges to grab a couple friends, get in the car, and take a random road trip.
No planning necessary. There's just so many more things you'd rather be doing than sitting in a desk.
3. You keep thinking about getting a new piercing or tattoo.
Cuz why not, am I right? These days, tattoos and piercings are becoming a lot more normal and accepted, and a mid-college crisis makes you want to do something really impulsive. And let me tell ya from personal experience, this stuff is addicting. Here is an actual photo of my left ear:
4. Your bank account is crying because you can't stop buying things you don't need.
You just can't seem to say no when someone asks to go shopping or out to eat. You won't be able to wear that dress in 10 years, so you might as well buy it now and put it to good use, right?
5. You choose to do everything but homework.
That 10 page paper can wait because your friends are going out for the third time this week and you just can't bear to miss it. Hello, cramming.
6. The thought of working a nine-five job in a few years makes you want to throw up.
You're not an adult. You barely know how to make mac and cheese. The future is scary.
7. You've changed your major three times and you're still questioning it.
How are you supposed to know exactly what you want to do for the rest of your life? I mean you don't have a crystal ball.
8. All you want is a good night's sleep, but you feel like you're wasting precious time.
Sleep is important, but so is making as many memories as you can while you're young. You may have barely had your eyes open all day in class, but you're sure as hell still going to that concert tonight.
9. When talking to someone that seems to have their life in order, you so badly want to ask what magical powers they possess.
You don't know what you're eating for lunch, but your friend already has a very thorough 10 year plan, and she's graduating a semester early.
10. At the end of the day, you're just trying to make the most of the time you have.
When you look back, you'll be thankful for your mid-college crisis because it brought you to countless experiences, good and bad. Making memories (and maybe a few mistakes along the way) is what college is all about. Okay, and maybe studying a little, too.
