10 Selfless New Years Resolutions

Every year as the clock strikes midnight transforming December 31st into January 1st, millions of people around the world wish for various things. Some good health, others true love. No matter what they wish for, everyone hopes for a better future, one that is full of happiness and breathes life. So instead of wishing for good grades and a vacation to the Bahamas this year, wish for these 10 selfless resolutions that will someday make this world a better place:

1. Environmental sustainability

The Earth we live on is a truly beautiful place, and we need to keep it that way. It may sound cliché but make sure you constantly recycle, never litter, and always take care of our environment. This resolution is going to save our world someday.

2. World peace

War, war, war. I don’t know about you but I am truly exhausted of hearing that word. When will there be enough peace in our world to stop sending our troops to foreign countries? When will we finally create a path towards everlasting unity among all the countries in our world, despite all differences? Wishing for this resolution will steer our world towards peace.

3. End of poverty

Personally, going to a university in a city has truly opened my eyes to the astonishing amount of poverty in our world. In addition to wishing for an end of poverty, make sure you set a personal resolution for yourself too. Whenever you see someone struggling or living on the streets, be generous, caring, and kind towards them. Selflessness is an important resolution to achieve.

4. Discovery of a cure

Every day someone around the world loses a loved one to a common disease or sickness. Pray for a cure to be discovered so that we can finally kill off the illnesses that have taken away the people we love.

5. Larger focus on mental health

Today, mental health seems to be the elephant in the room. Because of this, people struggle tremendously with happiness, stress, and other feelings that can be easily helped if we just focus on them more. Those who suffer from disorders like depression and anxietyneed support systems, and we need to change the way we handle and view them immediately. Living in a world with acceptance and proper care towards mental health is a very healthy one.

6. Gender equality

Although some countries have greatly reduced and even abolished the gender gap, other countries are still struggling. Women are still ranked lower than men in some areas of the world, and this must change. Whether its pertaining to the pay gap or even restrictions on occupations and clothing, we must make an effort to eliminate this discrimination once and for all.

7. Global education

Every child has the right to receive an education. However, not every child does. Wishing for accessible education around the world is an essential improvement for our society. If children receive an education globally, our world will become a more cultured, fair, and just place.

8. Safety

Safety, whether pertaining to on the streets, in neighborhoods, or even in households, is a topic that must be focused on. One day our world is going to be a safe one, lacking crime and other unfortunate events that occur in our world today. This resolution will eventually save humanity.

9. New inventions and technology

With the potential of technology rapidly increasing around the world, our quality of life has improved remarkably. New medicine has been produced, new jobs have been created, and new ways of life have been shaped. Wishing for this resolution will continue to increase all the possibilities and potential of our world.

10. Adventure

In order to achieve happiness in life, you need to step out of your comfort zone once in awhile. Letting loose and embracing adventure are the ultimate resolutions to make. Our planet would be such a thriving place if everyone would let go and dive together into a world full of risk taking and laughter. Adventure unifies people; it connects people with one another through an initial sense of fear and the final feeling of achievement. When deciding your New Years resolutions for the upcoming year, make sure to focus on the overall happiness and well-being of everyone in our world.

In honor of Mother’s Day, I have been thinking of all the things my mom does for my family and me. Although I couldn’t write nearly all of them, here are a few things that moms do for us.

They find that shirt that’s right in front of you, but just you can’t seem to find.

Thank You on wooden blocks

1. Thank you for being the one I can always count on to be honest.

A true friend will tell you if the shirt is ugly, or at least ask to borrow it and "accidentally" burn it.

2. Thank you for accepting me for who I am.

A best friend will love you regardless of the stale french fries you left on the floor of your car, or when you had lice in 8th grade and no one wanted to talk to you.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!
