10 Secret Beauty Tricks You Wish You Knew

With the holidays here, it’s easy to let things slip through the cracks like forgetting to pick up makeup remover or iron your shirt before a family dinner party. Don’t panic! We’ve collected eight Beauty Secrets using household items. You’ll be wondering how you didn’t know these before! Whether it be an at home girls’ night or you’re out of your must-have beauty product we have the solution for you.

1. Out of makeup remover?

No worries! Vaseline actually works AMAZINGLY! Just apply generously to your eye makeup and wipe off with a dry tissue. It works as an eyelash conditioner as well. BONUS: works to moisturize lips too!

2. Out of dry shampoo?

Baby powder is a great substitute for this but that’s not all! Waiting to get highlights and have roots growing in? This will actually temporarily lighten your roots as well help disguise them!

3. Out of lotion?

Baby oil at the end of your shower, followed with a light rinse, will help condition your skin without needing to apply lotion afterwards. What a time saver!

4. Out of eyebrow gel?

If you still have the brush you can spray hairspray onto it and comb through your brow to hold the shape. If you don't have the brush, you can still apply it with your fingertips.

5. Out of shampoo?

OK I swear I’m not crazy with this one. I actually got this tip from my hairdresser! Dish soap works to wash your hair even better than some shampoos because of the “grease fighting” component. After washing with this I usually can go an extra day without washing my hair.

6. Deep skin treatment needed?

Avocado mixed with honey will deep condition and clean your skin! Get ready to say hello to a renewed fresh face. You’ll look well rested in just ten minutes.

7. Don’t have time to iron your clothes?

A hair straightener will actually work just as well and won’t ruin the fabric. If you don't have a hair straighter just toss them in the dryer for 10 minutes!

8. In need of an exfoliating scrub?

Whether your lips are chapped and you need to shed some dead skin or you want super smooth legs Coffee grinds are actually the perfect at home solution. Just scrub your legs with coffee grind to exfoliate dead skin, rinse off, shave, and finish off with a moisturizing lotion.

9. Ran out of shaving cream?

Coconut oil has MANY beauty uses, this is one of my favorites! You can also use it to deep condition your hair during your shower, or to “oil wash” whiten your teeth… in fact you can do all three at the same time.

10. Interested in trying a skin toner?

Apple Cider Vinegar works as a purifying agent and levels the tone of your skin. It’s a perfect prep at the beginning of your day or before bed. You can also use apple cider vinegar as an immune booster if you’re starting to feel sick, just take a swig! Remember, Raw Apple Cider Vinegar is better because it’s organic.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
