10 Games To Play On A Road Trip

A few common and not so comon road trip activities that I remember from my family road trips.

Having taken a road trip back to Huntington this week at the end of spring break, I remembered some of the games we used to play among other car ride activities we still do every now and then on long car trips.

1. Eye Spy

Always a classic. It's silly, but eventually it must end because there are just not enough items of varying color to keep you going.

2. Mad Libs

The cheerleader of the car is really the best for this one. "Gimme a noun! Gimme a verb!"

3. The License Plate Game

Keep track in a journal or on a phone of each state you see. You can only count each state once. The person with the most at the end of the trip is the winner. One year we took a trip across country to Montana. We managed to see a few different Canadian plates as well. The other way to play is to find the state farthest from where you started the drive.

4. The A to Z sign game

Simply put, find a sign starting with A. Then find one with B. And so on. Have to do it in order.

5. The Ball of Air Game

This one might need some explaining. My family and I had the weird game when we were younger where we would throw around this invisible ball. We could throw it around the inside of the car, the outside, you could bounce it off that cow in the field if you wanted to. Anything.

6. Blaring The Radio

You've all done it, admit it. Sometimes you just find that jam and you just can't get out of it and the whole car turns into a beautiful, off pitch sing-a-long.

7. One Word Story

Each person says one word and it just goes around the car as you build

8. The Ministers Cat

This game actually comes from Scrooge the musical. Basically you clap on a beat and go around the group. Every time you start with, "The ministers cat is a/an..." and then start with a word beginning with A. When someone messes up a word or can't think of one on the beat, they are eliminated and you move onto the next letter. (Example: The ministers cat is an AWFUL cat.)

9. Sleep

Unless you're the driver of course. This tends to be a regular for me.

10. And of Course, Driving

Pray that some of the sleepers are willing to swap out with you at some point.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
