With the holidays quickly approaching it's easy to get caught up in the seasonal whirlwind. Everyone is stressed out about shopping, decorating, and plans to celebrate and it's easy to forget some of the most important things about the holiday season. So sit back and take a break from wrapping presents because here are 10 reminders to keep you on track this holiday season.
1.) Make Family A Priority
It's very easy to become overwhelmed with things to do and places to go during the holidays. However, if nothing else, make sure to remember to make time for your family. Time with the ones you love is so important and for them, it will be one of the best presents they receive.
2.) Everyone Loves Sweets
At a loss for what to give as a gift this year? Don't underestimate the power of sweets. Everyone loves yummy treats and they make wonderful gifts. In addition to being delicious, making these snacks can be a great holiday bonding tradition between you and family and friends.
3.) Keep The Magic Alive
This one is more geared towards Christmas alone. As we grow older and the glamour of the holidays fades away, it's easy to forget about the children in our lives and how they see Christmas. Though it is a personal choice, I firmly believe in keeping the magic alive during the holiday season. Talk about Santa, make "reindeer food" for Christmas Eve, and even go through the pain of letting the elves make a mess of your house. Trust me, when they're older they'll appreciate it and the memories will bring smiles for years.
4.) Remind Your Friends Of Their Importance
During the holidays most of us head home to be with family, and while that's of the utmost importance, don't let your friends completely slip your mind. Even if you have agreed not to get each other gifts or can't spend time together, a sweet text to remind them of their special place in your heart makes all the difference. Even better, actually pick up the phone for 5 minutes and let them know they're loved.
5.) Laughter Is Key
Unfortunately, the holidays tend to bring about much more stress than we would like. With all the craziness and pressure, it's very important to set aside time to just laugh. Whether it's snorting while watching old home videos with your family, or simply giggling at a cat in a Santa hat, make sure to get in a couple chuckles to make for a happier holiday.
6.) Easy On The Holiday Food
We all know that one of the best parts of the holiday season is the food. And while I believe this is the season of enjoyment, remember not to go overboard. If you have been very vigilant about your health during the rest of the year, don't let one month destroy all your progress. Remember, all good things in moderation. (But one more cookie won't kill you.)
7.) Giving Really Is Better Than Receiving
From the time I was a child my mother would constantly repeat this age-old saying. It wasn't until I got much older that I realized how right she was. Although everyone loves to get new things, I've found that seeing someone else's face when they receive a gift they truly love is priceless. Even if you don't have a lot of money to spend this season, a small gift with sentimental meaning can make the other person feel loved, and your heart swell at seeing their smile.
8.) You Don't Have To Have A S/O
Many people seem to feel pressure to have a significant other during the holiday season. Whether it's to placate family, attend different holiday socials, or simply so they don't have to be alone, many people jump into relationships right before the holidays. While it is nice to have someone by your side during this special time of year, make sure you genuinely care for the person and aren't just using them for comfort. It isn't about who you celebrate for a month with, but who will last through the other 11 months of the year.
9.) Avoid Competition
Many people lose sight of what's truly important around the holidays and make everything into a competition. Whether it's who has the cutest holiday picture, who has the best decorated home, or who gets the most gifts, people seem determined to be number one at something. Instead of focusing on these things, focus on making memories. They will last longer than anything else.
10.) Remember The Reason For The Season
No matter what holiday(s) you celebrate, remember what is most important. Keep your family and friends close, traditions alive, and a smile on your face. This is supposed to be the happiest time of the year, so make sure it stays that way. And above all, hold on tight to the memories you make, because those are the things that will last a lifetime.
