10 Reasons You Need a Dog in College

Despite what everyone seems to think, having a dog in college isn't such a bad thing!

The journey of life is sweeter when it is traveled with a dog.

1. You need a loyal friend.

Face it. We've all had friends that come into your life like a whirlwind and then leave like a tornado. Your pup won't do that! You're his #1 and he's your #1!

2. You need a cuddle buddy. Naps are better with puppies.

They're like cuddly stuffed animals with a built in heating system. How much better can it get??

3. You need an adventure partner.

He's always going to be up for a walk in the park, a drive to Sonic, a hiking trip, and even just a trip to Lowe's! Everyone needs a sidekick!

4. They’re an early detection system.

Whether you want to admit it or not, the world is a pretty scary place, especially if you live alone. Your best friend is also going to be the one to bark, jump off the bed, or just lick you in the face when he hears something abnormal. I'm all for a living and breathing security system!

5. You make friends.

I can't tell you how many times I've met people or talked to new people just because of my pup! I've made some amazing friends just because having a dog is an easy "ice-breaker" between people!

6. They’re good listeners.

Everyone talks about having that special person that they always tell everything to. Well, I tell everything to my pup. You know why? He doesn't talk back, he doesn't tell other people my secrets, and he always listens to me.

7. When you need a good reason to not go to that party, puppy is always there as a go-to excuse.

"Hey girl! There's this huge party on Friday! You should come! It'll be super fun!" ------- "Uhh.. Man, I would, but I have my pup at home and I can't leave him alone that long."

That is THE #1 way to get out of going to parties that you really don't want to go to! Or even if you just want to stay home and read a book instead of going to dinner. He can always be your reason to have some time to yourself!

8. They prepare you for children (which should be a long way away). AKA responsibility.

I know, I know, I said "children." But really, you have to learn to budget your money, plan out your day, and take care of something that is living and breathing (that requires more attention than a fish or hamster). It's a great way to help you learn responsibility and grow up a little!

9. They don’t judge you for wearing pajamas all day.

In contrast to #8, they will also allow you to ignore some responsibilities and lay in bed all day, when you're just not feeling like adulting.

10. When you’re sad, they know it and they’re always there to give you puppy kisses.

Ever tried to be in a bad mood while a dog is licking your face and ears? It's really hard to do. They're always a wonderful "pick-me-up" when you've just had a really crappy week.

*Disclaimer: I'm not saying that having a dog is for everyone, but I know it is for a lot of people. If you know that you are not able to take care of a dog and give it the attention it needs, don't buy or adopt one. They're amazing to have, but they require attention!

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.

Aubrey Plaza is one of my favorite humans in Hollywood. She's honest, blunt, unapologetic, and hilarious. I just started my sophomore year of college, and found that some of her best moments can accurately describe the start of the school year.

1. When your advisor tells you that you should declare a major soon.

2. Seeing the lost and confused freshmen and remembering that was you a short year ago, and now being grateful you know the ins and outs of the campus.

3. Going to the involvement fair to sign up for more clubs knowing that you are already too involved.

4. When you actually do the reading required for the first class.

5. Seeing your friends for the first time since last semester.

6. When you're already drowning in homework during syllabus week.

7. Realizing you don't have the same excitement for classes as you did as a freshman.

8. Going home and seeing people from high school gets weirder the older you get.

Dear Mom,

You took care of me and my brothers our entire lives and you still continue to! I will not be able to truly grasp all of the hard work that you put into this family until I create my own one day. But, I know that there are plenty of times I forgot to give you a simple thank you or an appreciative smile. I thank you for everything that you have done for me and will continue to do for me. Here are some examples of those times where you had my back and I forgot to pat your back for saving me:

College is hard. As people ages 18-22, we’re just trying to figure out what we’re doing with our lives, our careers, our eating habits, exercise routines, sleep patterns, and other necessities for adult life. We definitely don’t take proper care of ourselves; it’s basically impossible when we have essays, tests and readings due and somehow we’re supposed to eat right, exercise and sleep. We’re doomed to get sick. I have zero experience in science but when I get sick there are certain things I do to make myself better.
