Recently, my girlfriend and I decided that we wanted to go on a daycation at some point. If you are not familiar with a daycation it is much like a vacation but everything is done in one day and you return home the same day or sometime close to it.
So, on Friday we decided that we wanted to go from Chicago to St. Louis, Mo. since I was home for spring break. We took an early morning train to Chicago from the suburbs then continued on Amtrak from Chicago to St. Louis and then did the same thing in the reverse that evening. While in St. Louis we went to The City Museum, it is sort of like a collection of everything and a giant playground you can climb through and touch everything-- imagine a safe-to-play-in junkyard, yet incredibly cool. So enough with my story, this is my list of why daycations are the best.
1. While getting up early sucks, spending time early in the morning with someone you love is the best.
Everyone hates getting up early but at the same time it is worth it when you will get to see all of the awesome things you have planned
2. Eating breakfast at 5 a.m. on a Saturday at a Denny's gives you the opportunity to see a wide range of people, from the drunks who are still very drunk from the night before, to a cute elderly couple, to a young family traveling with kids.
Early mornings are the only time you get to eat great fresh breakfast food while seeing every kind of person mingle.
3. Watching the sun rise while on a train or what every kind of mode of transportation you use has something magical about it.
The sun rising is the most beautiful thing when you can just watch it.
4. Meeting and talking with strangers is always interesting.
We have always been told not to talk to strangers, but it is often just so right.
5. Getting to your destination turns your sleepy groggy attitude from sitting for hours turn you into a kid hyped up on candy.
'
After being half asleep for hours once you get hyper you feel like this dog.
6. Finding your way around parts of a city you have never explored becomes quite interesting.
Being lost is half the fun.
7. Then you realize you have technology and you are not lost after all.
But you are not lost because of the magical Iphone.
8. Exploring the place you chose to go is the best no matter if it's a museum, an amusement park, a national park, or a combination of all of above as mine was.
Exploring places is one of the most magical things you can experience.
9. Trying new food that you cannot get at home is an exciting, amazing, yet possibly dangerous proposition.
Trying new food is awesome but depressing because you know you most likely will not be able to find this awesome food until you come back.
10. But then returning home at the end of all your nonsense to sleep in your own bed makes the whole thing 10 times better.
But after the whole experience sleeping in your own bed lets you get the best night sleep.
