Growing up in the 90s and early 2000s, one of the best Halloween movies of all time is none other than Disney's "Halloweentown." The movie starring Debbie Reynolds and Kimberly J. Brown premiered on Disney Channel in 1998 and has continuously been everyone's movie of choice during this spooky time of year. It's that time once again, the time most of us think about what we're going to be for Halloween or when we're going to find the time to sit down to watch all the movies in this franchise in one sitting. Goblins, witches, and ghosts...and every day being Halloween? Sounds pretty good to me.
If you're like me, then these are the reasons why you always wished you lived in Halloweentown.
1. Every day is Halloween.
In Halloweeentown, every single day is Halloween - how awesome is that? You would always be wearing your favorite costume, carving pumpkins, or telling ghost stories, all in which is your actual reality of everyday life.
2. A flying school bus.
After watching this movie as a kid, you can't honestly say you never imagined your bus taking flight on your way to school like it does in Halloweentown. For one thing, this would make going on the bus a lot cooler and would cut down so much time spent in traffic. Plus, it brings you from the Mortal World to Halloweentown, the perfect escape from any midterms you need to take.
3. No judgment based on appearance.
In Halloweentown, everyone is friendly to one another. Whether you're a goblin, vampire, werewolf, witch, or zombie, all citizens get to know one another and are always there to look out for each other regardless of what their appearances may be.
4. Flying on a broomstick. To us mortals, flying on a broomstick is something we dream of having the opportunity to do. In Halloweentown, this is the norm and all witches and warlocks have the ability to do this. I don't know about you, but I think I found my new way around campus.
5. MAGIC.
Magic is really very simple - all you've got to do is want something and then let yourself have it.
Living in Halloweentown, you have access to get your hands on spell books, magical wands, potions, cauldrons, and any magical tool you can think of. If you ever wanted to change something, magic was your outlet to do so, including lighting up the giant jack-o-lantern in the town square.
6. Even microwaving your food involves magic!
Are you cookin' chowder, Grandma? I like chowder.
If you ever need to microwave some food or even whip up some instant recipes of your favorite spells, Halloweentown offers that for you. Unless you have to create the spell from scratch, then you have to get extra creative and retrieve the ingredients on your own. Watch out for those werewolves...
7. It's always fall.
It's always the season of fall in Halloweentown, meaning beautiful foliage, pumpkins, hay bales, corn stalks, and the whole nine yards. Everywhere you look is a view of scenery enriched with orange, brown, and red colors in which reflect this season. With the season of fall comes activities like pumpkin picking, bobbing for apples, corn mazes, or any other fall activity you can possibly imagine, and that's offered to you every single day. Think about all the basic Instagram photos you can take, #nofilter necessary.
8. Speedy taxi service.
Ever need to get somewhere fast and safely? Well, Benny the very popular skeleton taxi driver of Halloweentown is at your service. Each and every cab ride from Benny is filled with countless jokes so you're always entertained, and he doesn't charge much. Whether you're fleeing for your life or going over the river and through the woods to visit grandma, Benny is your best bet. Just don't get him angry - he'll have a bone to pick with you. (Sorry for the corny joke, but I had to.)
9. The time change.
One of the coolest things about Halloweentown is the time difference between there and the Mortal World. Time passes differently there, so if you sneak out of your house in the Mortal World on Halloween night and flee to Halloweentown for a few hours, the time difference in the Mortal World will be significantly less! Think about how long you could be out for without your parents knowing! Originally, you couldn't make phone calls between the Mortal World and Halloweentown, but ever since the second movie in the franchise, you can make phone calls by using your handy dandy skull phones.
10. The sense of community.
The citizens of Halloweentown have been there for each other since the dawn of time. They know what it's like to be judged and mistreated by mortals for centuries, so instead of fighting back, they band together and have created a world of their own. By living in peace and harmony, creatures of all kinds that may have thought not to get along, are actually the best of friends and will forever stand up for each other whenever that opportunity arises. Living in such a community would teach you these values of being loyal, friendship, and most of all, family.
"Halloweentown" will forever be one of my favorite movies from both childhood and adulthood, even though I'm still waiting for the flying school bus to pick me up and take me away to this quaint, magical place. But until then, whenever I think about living in this world, I always remember the wise words from Aggie Cromwell herself:
