With Valentine's Day just a couple of days away, people are starting to get ready for the day, or are waiting until the last minute to take a quick visit to Walgreens and buy a teddy bear and flowers. Yet, I believe that Valentine's Day is by far the worst holiday to celebrate.
Here are ten reasons why:
1. It's A Waste Of Money
For starters, it is a waste of money. Around this time of the year, guys and gals go to a nearby drug store to buy flowers or a gift like a stuffed animal even though all of that will end up in the trash by the end of the month. For flowers, they will wilt and die within a few days while stuffed animals will be sent to closets around the country to gather dust or be re-gifted in some way.
Yes, there are gifts like lingerie and chocolates that may be of some use on February 14th; however, many women know that guys are just going to buy a "sexy" lingerie that is going to be uncomfortable and somewhat complex. Also, chocolates are a one-time usage and will make the person who received them feel unhealthy if he or she were to eat an entire box of chocolates in one sitting.
If someone is going to buy someone a gift for Valentine's Day, he or she might as well throw their money into the air like a butthead.
2. It's Made By Society For Couples
With Valentine's day being the time where couple celebrate their "love" with each other, many can display their affection towards one another on social media. By displaying this type of affection to the world, couples end up making society believe that everyone has to be in a relationship and can never be single. This pressures single people - particularly women - to find someone right away and be in a relationship.
Even if single women are immune to the pressure from society, there is nothing that they can use to celebrate Valentine's Day without being judged. The only things out there for single women during the holiday are chick flick movies and alcohol. Both options are bad for single women because chick flicks consists of female characters who end up finding someone in the end while alcohol causes women to make bad decisions, to which many will regret the morning after.
3. It Pressures Couples To Do Something
It is not just single ladies that are pressured by society. The same goes for men who are already taken. Society wants guys to take their girlfriends, wives, partners, or even escorts on a date during Valentine's Day. These dates range from a trip to a restaurant, a trip to see a chick flick instead of a good comedy like "Caddyshack" or "Animal House", or to places that are only popular during special occasions.
Despite having to take their other half to any of these common places, guys will end up empty handed at the end of the night because these dates are not cheap and it will be rude to ask their date to chip in.
Even if a guy goes all out for a date and does everything that is common for a Valentine's Day date, he may not get lucky because his date may not feel he or she is in the mood for anything else.
4. It Has No Meaning
Really, what is the point of Valentine's Day? It is not a day of remembering an event in our history such as President's Day or Veteran's Day. Mainly, Valentine's Day is a day for businesses to have sales and discounts as well as to sell ridiculous gifts and items that are only going to be used one time.
5. It Prevents Singles From Going Out
On the night of Valentine's Day, singles cannot go out without being bombarded by sales and dozens of couples showcasing their affection towards one another. Many single people cannot go to a movie theater or to a restaurant without having to be the odd ball of the pack. The only public places that singles can be safe are at clubs or bars; however, single men and women get attack by drunk flirtations from other people who end up making a fool of themselves.
Singles can stay at home and watch Netflix by themselves, but what's the fun with that? We as singles do that all the time, 24/7. Ultimately, singles will be pressured to stay indoors and eat their emotions.
6. It's obligatory
If Valentine's Day is the time where couples have to buy flowers and candy for their other half, then why can't the gifts continue to occur throughout the year? Since Valentine's Day is the time for couple to show their affections, many feel obligated to do something for their loved ones. As a result, many gifts seems cliche and tacky because other couples are giving the same gifts at the same time.
7. It Causes Businesses To Focus More on Quantity, Not Quality
Once February comes around, businesses tend to go all out just a little too much. This may cause the customers to be affected. Many restaurants end up accepting more couples or customers than usual on February 14th, causing tight spaces to eat or have a conversation with someone.
Also, many items like flowers, greeting cards, and other gift items increase in prices as a result because business want more money and know that there is a demand for them when February comes around.
8. It's Bad For The Environment
With all these gifts and food being made for this one day, there is a large amount of waste that accumulates. Roses and other flowers wither and die out after a couple of days; food gets thrown away after the end of a dinner date or after a couple of weeks of being in the fridge; teddy bears and other stuffed animals are put away in a closet or a storage system until it is needed for a break-up ritual. Overall, these senses of waste causes more carbon dioxide to be produced and more money spent on packaging and gift wrapping.
9. It Has A Dark Origin
Not a lot of people know this but Valentine's Day has a dark origin story. During the Roman Empire, people celebrated the feast of Lupercalia where men sacrificed a goat or a dog and whipped women with animal hides. In the third century on February 14th, Emperor Claudius II executed two men - both named Valentine. As a result of both Valentines' martyrdoms, the Catholic Church had February 14th to be a day to honor them.
Talk about a dark comedy.
10. It Does Not Benefit Anyone
Let's be honest, Valentine's Day does not benefit anyone at all. If women are going out by themselves or on a date, they have to dress up in skimpy outfits and wear uncomfortable shoes after spending over two hours putting their make up on. And after the dates and the hookups, women have to return home just to wipe and clean all of their hard work away.
Men end up broker than before and may not get lucky after a date or a night out. Even if they do get lucky, some may end up getting an STD or an unexpected gift if they did not prepare themselves for.
Single people either get their relationship status judged by society and may end the night by accidentally hooking up with a random stranger they met at a bar or club.
It seems that society and businesses try to act and pretend that everybody is at least getting something on February 14th.
But Wait . . .
There is still hope to make Valentine's Day good again. Businesses can hold themselves back by not going all out on their gifts. Couples should not post anything on Valentine's Day and remain quiet about their love and affection towards one another. Society can allow single people to go out without being judged or be pressured to be with someone. Women can have a choice on whether to dress up or wear comfortable clothing. And guys should not have to spend a fortune to impress their other half.
Instead Valentine's Day should be like any other day. Gloomy and hopeless.
