10 Reasons Why Thanksgiving Is Better In The South

We all know that the south has all the seasons: spring, summer, fall and winter. More often than not, we get to experience those wonderful seasons with the best holidays of the year. Here is a list of 10 reasons why one of the best holidays, Thanksgiving, is better in the south (mostly everything is better in the south).

1. The food. We all know that Thanksgiving is showing who and what you are thankful for and quite frankly, in the south, we love our food. In the south we have some of the best foods that you will not be able to find above the Mason-Dixon line. Some of the foods that we have on Thanksgiving in the south include dressing, not stuffing, cranberry sauce, mac and cheese, sweet potatoes, giblet gravy, black eyed peas, corn, and of course the turkey, to name a few.

2. SEC football. It is not Thanksgiving in the south without good 'ole SEC college football, especially the rivalry games like UGA vs. GA Tech. GO DAWGS!

3. The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. It is not Thanksgiving without watching the biggest parade in the country, the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

4. With Thanksgiving coming to an end, naturally Christmas starts. In the south, we like to start Christmas as soon as possible. So a lot of traditions include putting up and decorating the Christmas tree on the evening of Thanksgiving, along with watching Christmas movies and playing Christmas music.

5. The family. On Thanksgiving in the south, it isn't usually just the immediate family that gets together, but the entire family. We are talking aunts, uncles, cousins, grandchildren, grandparents, and so on and so forth. We like to throw the football, catch up on any current events that have been missed recently, and share with each other what we are thankful for this Thanksgiving.

6. Friendsgiving. Our friends mean a lot to us, so we like to celebrate apart from our families, with our friends and have our own Thanksgiving dinner with the other people in our life that mean the most to us. Who can have too much Thanksgiving food, am I right?

7. Saying what you are thankful for. Going around the table with the people that mean the most to you and saying what you are most thankful for really makes it feel even more like Thanksgiving, especially since that is what the season is all about.

8. The weather. Now Georgia can have bipolar weather sometimes, but when the weather is acting as it should, Thanksgiving is set in the perfect fall weather. Who doesn't love the changing of the leaves, cooler nights, and getting to sleep longer?

9. The long weekend. Whether you are off from school or work, you have a longer weekend to spend with your family, start decorating for Christmas, or go shopping, Thanksgiving is great for giving you off days.

10. Leftovers. After Thanksgiving, you have plenty of food to last you for the rest of the week and longer. It is great not having to cook every night.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
