Technology is great! I cannot even remember what I used to do with my time before smartphones and social media apps. How else could I ever see what you ate for dinner or how full your gas tank is?
Smartphones and other technologies have really made life better, for the most part. They allow people to have access to more things, more quickly. People can say things they might not have been able to, otherwise, and it is helpful in a crisis. So what could be possibly be wrong? Well, I am about to tell you.
I was recently filling out some paper work for my new job, and realized I could not spell or write like I used to. To make things worse, the supervisor was standing over my shoulder, correcting all my errors. After that, I had to get to the bottom of this problem -- my phone! I do not want to say my smartphone is making me dumb, but I will give ten reasons why technology is directly, or indirectly, ruining some parts of our lives.
1. Spelling.
I cannot spell, anymore! I am so used to autocorrect, or the little red squiggle line, telling me when something is wrong and fixing it. For the most part, I do not even need to spell on my own, but when I do it is so embarrassing.
2. Grammar.
This is almost the same as the spelling issue. If I am writing something on paper, for some awful reason I cannot always tell when I have a sentence fragment. There is no green line to tell me.
3. Navigation.
I love the GPS. When I don't know where something is, it's a wonderful resource. I have become too spoiled, though. Now, I could not even tell you how to get down the street from my place because I don't even look at road signs anymore. Whether this is really an issue, or not, is debatable but it is a thing for me.
4. Person-to-person interactions.
I prefer phone conversations, but now that people text, and communicate in other ways, they act weirdly if they receive a phone call -- almost as if they are offended that you called and actually want to speak to them. Who does that?
5. My wardrobe.
This is almost embarrassing to admit, but I choose my outfit by determining what will look better on Instagram. People are always snapping pictures and videos and you never know when you are going to be tagged in something. Members of the Greek community have an especially large amount of events to attend, which include lots of pictures. I also have to be very conscience of what I have already worn in photos. Believe it or not, it is so easy to pick out pictures on Instagram, or something that features you, in the same outfit. This might seem shallow, but it is not; it is a real issue..6. Self esteem.
Since self worth is measured by the amount of likes or comments that one gets, so it can be sad if you don't get the amount that you wanted. If this sounds like you, you should know that you are much more than the likes; chances are, you just posted it at a bad time.
7. Sleep.
Social media is always poppin' at night and I am just not strong enough to put my phone down to go to sleep. This is not technology's fault, but it plays a part.
8. Focusing.
When you hear a notification tone on your phone or computer, it is so hard to continue focusing, engaging in a lecture or working, knowing that you have something waiting for you.
9. Relationships.
People just go wild on social media and other places through technology. People become stalkers, looking to see who liked their boo's picture or Facebook status, which eventually turns into an argument or a possible breakup.
10. Bodies.
I know it cannot be good for my wrists to always be holding my phone and typing all the time. Looking down at your phone can actually hurt your neck because your big head is just hanging on it. Let's just mention how bad it hurts when you accidentally drop your phone on your face.Despite these ten issues, I would not have it any other way. 1-4-3, technology ;)
