10 Reasons Why I'm Not Ready to Graduate College

College… The best and worst four years of your life. Through the whole four years, I just wanted it to end; but now that it is ending, I’m not quite sure what to do. Here is a list of 10 reasons why I am not ready to graduate college.

1) I’m not ready to adult

The thought of having to find a big girl job, a place to live, and learn how to be an adult is just not appealing at all.

2) Day drinking will no longer be socially acceptable

As an adult, I can’t just hang out in the driveway, blast music, be obnoxious, play beer games, and drink with all of my friends. My weekends will consist of working, preparing to work, or sleeping.

3) I’m so not ready for real work

Think about it- in college we have 2 or 3 classes a day, then are free the rest of the day to do as we choose. After I graduate, I’m going to have to work for what feels like FOREVER. There is no chance I’m ready for that.

4) I can’t use my flex or meal swipes to get food anymore

Think about all the money I’m going to spend on just buying food alone! I’m a college kid! I eat all the time! I don’t want to spend all my money on food, but I know it is going to happen! Can I just use Monopoly money instead of real money?

5) I feel like I’m not prepared at all

Don’t get me wrong- I know my stuff and how to apply it; but I’m so not ready to actually do it all the time and make sure it is right every time. Life is gonna hit me in the face real hard.

6) I’m not ready to be away from my friends

I made my best friends in college. I love them all so much and the thought of us not being within a 5-minute radius kills me. I won’t be able to take a 2-minute drive and just waltz into their house anymore. I’m going to have to drive hours just to see them now, and that just makes me sad.

7) I won’t know what to blame anymore

Now, when I do something dumb I just say “I’m a college kid,” and that’s my excuse. What do I say when I graduate and I’m not longer a dumb college kid?! I need to start thinking of new excuses.

8) What is life without breaks?

In college we have Thanksgiving break, a month and a half long winter break, spring break, and then summer! I think I’m going to go insane working all the time without significant breaks.

9) I never learned basic adult things

Ask me how to do my taxes, balance a checkbook, or how to pick an insurance, or how to go about purchasing big things. I have no freaking idea. I was never taught any of this stuff!

10) I’m not ready to pay for tons of expensive things.

Right now, all I pay for is rent, food, and utilities. I’m not ready to pay for more expensive rent, insurance, bills on bills on bills, food, car, phone, more bills, and everything else that adults have to pay for. I just can’t adult.

Parks and Recreation excitedly gathered around a laptop at a table in an office setting.

The library. Club lib. The place every college student goes when they want to try and be a productive member of society. Who better to explain your experience than Parks and Rec?

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
