Texas, being the 2nd largest state in the United States, is comprised of many cities that each hold a great amount of significance to its residents. Everyone in Texas is full of pride, and that's a fact, but it never just ends at being a Texan. Once cities come into play, there are words thrown at others who believe their city is the best. I'm just going to end the "beef" right here and provide you all with incentives on why Houston is not the best city in Texas.
1. Location
Who would want to live in a big city enriched with urban amenities, while still being just a short hour away from the coast? Sounds like a lot of pollution, traffic, and dirty beaches to me.
2. The Texans
The Texans went 9-7 in the 2016 football season and won one divisional playoff game in 2017 against the Oakland Raiders before getting booted off by the New England Patriots. On the other hand, the Dallas Cowboys went 13-3 during the 2016 Football Season, and did not win a playoff game, and have only had about 2 or 3 playoff wins since their last Super Bowl in 1996... but they're still better. The Texans may have been named as having the top defense in the league, but who cares right?
3. NASA
Is space exploration REALLY that important? I mean, Space Center Houston is only a leading science and space learning center and is Houston's No. 1 attraction for international visitors, the Official Visitor Center of NASA Johnson Space Center and the only Smithsonian Affiliate in the greater Houston area. Why would we want the youth to visit NASA and be informed of how the birth of the space-age has provided a plethora of new ideas and ground-breaking technologies that we use every day? That isn't beneficial to children at all.
4. The Galleria
Why would we want a gigantic, upscale, international shopping destination that hosts more than 24 million visitors annually, offers world-class shopping with more than 375 stores, 30 restaurants, two hotels, and a full-sized ice rink? The Galleria is also the hot spot for celebrities when they're in town. Sounds a little too overwhelming for me. I'll pass.
5. The Museums
Houston is home to 19 museums, one of them being the Museum of Fine Arts, which opened in the 1920's, and at that time was only the third museum located in the South. To this day, this museum remains one of the nation's largest and most renowned art institutions (boring). Many museums in the well-known Museum District located in Downtown, including the Fine Arts museum, offer free entry on Thursdays. To be honest, I think they're being too nice. Free entry? Really? Is this some type of pity party?
6. The University of Houston
The University of Houston is the third largest university in Texas and is ranked in Princeton Review's 2016 edition of "Colleges That Pay You Back: Schools That Give You the Best Bang for Your Tuition Buck." which states that UH graduates with at least a bachelor's degree can have a median starting salary of $51,700 and median mid-career salary of $86,600. UH is also the second most diverse university in the country, with no ethnic or racial group making up a majority. Not to mention, the athletics are great. What does these statistics prove exactly? Well, they prove that the University of Houston is extremely overrated. Diversity? Athletics? Beneficial education? That's not what we go to college for. We want to have fun.
7. Hermann Park
Why would anyone in their right minds want to visit a park that is not only a beautiful portrayal of nature, but a source of entertainment, which includes a golf course, an outdoor theater (which hosts free shows), a jogging track, a beautiful rose garden, picnic spaces, and a butterfly exhibit? Plus, the reflection pool looks like a knock off of the Washington Monument. Sounds like Houston is just a big copycat.
8. The Graffiti
So, Houston must condone vandalism if they allow these HORRIBLE, VULGAR words to be plastered around the city. I would rather not promote crime, thanks.
9. The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo
Who wants to watch boring calf scrambles? Who wants to gain 10 pounds by eating fried Oreos, foot-long hot dogs, and turkey legs? And to top it all off, there are carnival rides to barf all the food you ate beforehand. Yuck. I'll pass.
10. Beyoncé
Yes, Beyoncé, the grammy-award winning most nominated woman in awards' history, multi-millionaire solo artist, was born and raised in Houston. So? She's mediocre.
It's safe to say that Houston, Texas is just one big mess. A lot of traffic, trash sports teams, and no entertainment whatsoever.
Said no one ever.
If you didn't catch the satire in this piece, then you probably aren't from Houston. I love my city, the good and the bad. I love everything about this place, the culture, the diversity, the amenities, the entertainment... everything. I wouldn't have wanted to been born and raised anywhere else because Houston is most definitely the BEST city in Texas AND will still ALWAYS be better than Dallas. Case closed. No questions asked. H-town till the day i die.
