10 Reasons Why Hamilton An American Musical Is #1

1. The Soundtrack

The Hamilton soundtrack is the main focus of the whole musical. Since almost the entire play is sung in catchy rhymes, the songs must be good. The soundtrack consists of 46 songs, varying in length. Many people, who do not see the musical, often listen to the soundtrack until they get to see the musical.

2. History Lesson

Hamilton is based on America’s first secretary of treasury, Alexander Hamilton’s life. Since Hamilton was involved in all the Founding Fathers lives, we get to also follow their lives. In the musical’s songs, we learn that the Battle of Yorktown was fought in 1781, George Washington resigned from office, and that Thomas Jefferson won the election of 1800 over John Adams.

3. The Choreography

Choreographer, Andy Blankenbuehler, also choreographed In The Heights, 2016 Cats Revival, and, Bring In On: The Musical. Blankenbuehler won several awards including a Tony Award for Best Choreography, and choreographed the musical Hamilton both Off-Broadway and on Broadway.

4. Spike of Popularity

Since the style of music is new (I mean it’s a historical musical with hip-hop and rap), everyone is going crazy for it. The musical came out in 2015, and almost instantly rose to the top of the charts.

5. Based on a Book

While on vacation, Lin-Manuel Miranda read a 300 page biography about the one and only, Alexander Hamilton. He wondered why no one even thought of writing a musical about this man’s life. The novel, Alexander Hamilton is written by Ron Chernow.

6. Great for all ages

Hamilton, like I said, is the ultimate history lesson. So, when you are in class, learning about The Federalist Papers, or Washington’s Farewell Address, you can listen to the catchy rhymes and get an A on your test. Also, if you aren’t in school and just love history and Broadway musicals, Hamilton should be your number 1 choice!

7. Lin-Manuel Miranda

Song writer of Hamilton, Lin-Manuel Miranda is the son of Puerto Rican descents. Miranda wrote another musical called In The Heights, based on his hometown, Washington Heights, in Manhattan. Miranda casts himself as the main character of Hamilton, Alexander Hamilton, since he saw himself as Alexander.

8. The Diversity

Like almost all Broadway shows, Hamilton casting directors search for a specific look. Casting directors are looking for mixed races, like African-American, Hispanic, or a mix of both. Writer Lin-Manuel Miranda says he wanted to portray what America looks like today, rather than what is looked like in the 1700's.

9. Richard Rogers Theater

The Richard Rogers Theater is located on West 26th Street, between Broadway and 8th Avenue, and about a block away from Times Square. Richard Rogers was originally named Chanin’s 46th Street Theater, but then changed to Richard Rogers in 1990. Some of the musicals that were held in this theater was, 1776, and Miranda’s first musical, In The Heights.

10. The Amount of Passion That Goes Into It

Of course, all the actors and actresses on Broadway have a passion for what they are doing, and Hamilton is not different. Each actor and actress have been practice their splits and jumps for months and months. Most of the songs have quick rhymes that have to be spoken with the right articulation, and probably take weeks of memorizing!

6 Signs You Are An English Major

There are various stereotypes about college students, most of which revolve around the concept of your major. Unfortunately, we often let stereotypes precede our own judgments, and we take what information is immediately available to us rather than forming our own opinions after considerable reflection. If I got a dollar for every time my friends have made a joke about my major I could pay my tuition. One stereotype on campus is the sensitive, overly critical and rigid English major. Here are six telltale signs you are one of them.

27 Things 'The Office' Has Taught Us

"The Office" is a mockumentary based on everyday office life featuring love triangles, silly pranks and everything in between. It can get pretty crazy for just an average day at the office.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

Books were always about understanding for me, about learning the way someone else sees, about connection.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

I keep making this joke whenever the idea of books is brought up: "God, I wish I knew how to read." It runs parallel to another stupid phrase, as I watch my friends struggle through their calculus classes late at night in our floor lounge: "I hope this is the year that I learn to count." They're both truly idiotic expressions, but, when I consider the former, I sometimes wonder if there's some truth to it.
