After our first beloved lab, Hank, died, I didn't know if I would ever be able to own a dog again. We spent several months without our seventh member of the family, and the hole he left in our lives and hearts was a tough spot to fill. Hank was loyal, dependable, and loving. The running joke in the family was that he was our version of "Marley."
However, the summer before I started college, my family decided to take a chance, buying another dog, who was much different than Hank. This one, which we later named Sidney, was joyful, excited, and energetic for life. She loved to snuggle and always is demanding to be right at our sides, keeping up with whatever adventure of life that we are currently pursuing.
From having these two dogs, I have learned so much about them and have truly come to admire the way they immediately come into our world and love. To them, discrimination and prejudice doesn't exist, and we, the human, become their whole world. There are too many reasons as to why dogs are simply the best creatures, but here's my brave attempt at 10 of them.
1. They are SO much more effective than a doorbell.
Not only are they louder, but dogs can also spot a person (or squirrel, ant, or floating leaf) from a mile away.
2. They are the BEST snuggle buddies.
This picture really says it all.
3. When you are holding a treat, they make you feel like a celebrity.
Our first dog loved popcorn and our second loves ice cubes. Whenever I am holding either of those two things, I feel like a celebrity with the paparazzi surrounding me. (Hey, it can be a nice confidence boost though. Yes, I am aware that it's because I have food, but a girl can dream right?)
4. They are typically more excited to see you than your human family is.
Me: Hi guys, I'm home!
Family: Oh, hey.
Dog: OMG!
Dog: NO WAY!
DOG: *Runs around frantically and acts like it has been 20 years, rather than
20 minutes since she has last seen me.*
5. It’s hard to stay mad at them for too long, because they are too gosh darn cute.
The puppy dog eyes are a real thing, friends.
6. They stay with you when they know something’s wrong.
Dogs know when something isn't right, and they won't leave your side until everything is okay again.
7. They are experts at listening.
From anything to rants about the long line at the grocery store to YET another attempt of a failed pick-up line, your dog has heard it all.
8. They teach us how to see more joy in the world around us.
I swear, dogs know how to smile.
9. Let’s be honest: they have a good sense of humor.
They can be so silly sometimes and provide perfect photo and video opportunities. (If you don't believe me, just type in "Funny Dog Videos" on YouTube.)
10. And finally, they love you no matter what!
My two dogs will always have a lasting impression on my family and me! They showed me so much love and support than I will never be able to fully repay.
