Everyone that surrounds me is in a relationship. My two best friends are dating each other and my other best friend just found his significant other. He left me at the single party alone for someone who would buy him doughnuts and kiss him everyday before work. That could have been my job, but let's be honest I would definitely eat the doughnuts before they ever got to him. So, it is probably good he got into a relationship. Wow, what kind of friend am I? Yeah, I would have left me alone at the single party too!
The point is that everyone around me is happy, but they're happy with someone else. It can truly make you question your life when all your friends are in relationships and when every time you scroll down your time feed someone is engaged or married or pregnant. Yeah, it's a hard knock life. Trust me, I have questioned my life plenty of times. I am like, "How is this beautiful girl with a banging personality single?" Don't laugh at me, I'm conceited, it is one of my best qualities.
The point is that life moves in circles. Sometimes you go around alone, but when you find someone it is great. This single life has taught me some pretty valuable lessons that have helped me become a better me. I have learned that it's okay to be single, because it's kind of a great thing eating an entire box of doughnuts by myself and not having to share with someone.
1. You Start To Appreciate Yourself
You never really know who someone is until you spend a little time with them. The thing about being single is that you are by yourself. When you're by yourself you spend time with yourself. You find out that you like pineapple now and you find out that you really love the person you have become. You might not start sending yourself flowers on your birthday, but you do appreciate yourself a lot more. You start to realize that you being by yourself means that you just get to pamper yourself a little more.
2. When You Come Back Home It Is Just The Way You Left It
There is not a random pizza box in the corner or clothes all over your floor. You know where you put that picture two weeks ago? Yeah, it is still there. No one is coming in to make themselves comfortable when you're not there or accidentally rearranging your stuff. When you leave your palace you can be sure that when you return everything will be the way you left it. So worries are gone!
3. All The Sleepovers You Want
You don't have to worry about asking your significant other if your bestie can spend the night. You don't have to check in with someone when you've had just a little too much fun and you need to spend the night with your best guy friend. You can just do it! Unlimited sleepovers means lots of pizza, soda, and bad decisions that you will regret in the morning which will lead to you going to the gym.
4. You Can Buy Your Own Damn Doughnuts
You know that thing called sharing? Well it does not matter, because you're not obligated to do it on a regular basis anymore? You can get your own doughnuts and eat the entire box! You don't have to worry about the cold stares when he finds the box buried under your bed or in your trash. You can eat all of your food guilt free.
5. Your Friendships Get Better
You never realize how busy life can be as an adult. People get buried in their jobs and making sure their relationship with their significant other is always on point. Although, one thing that usually takes a back burner is our friendships. It's not because we don't care, it's because we unknowingly prioritize. We realize that our friends will be there for us forever. If we haven't spoken to our friends for ten years and then we show up on their doorstep, we will talk all night like no time has been lost. Although, you find that you have a lot more time to spend with your friends because your schedule is open. You find that dinner dates are becoming regular and so are nights out with the crew.
6. Vacations Are Cheaper
Vacation never felt so good than when you can do whatever you want! An uber ride is cheaper for one than two! When you go on vacation you can take a part of things that are a little girly or a little manly without feeling the inevitable guilt. You don't have to worry about being late to the event, because you got "tied up." You just have to worry about waking up on time and enjoying your days away from reality.
7. Adventures Are Only A Click Away
That plane ride to Fiji that only has a cheap ticket for one seat is totally yours! Adventures are only a click away. There is no need to schedule around someone or with someone unless you want to. You can hop on a plane without telling anyone, okay maybe you need to notify your place of work and your mother, and just go wherever you want.
8. Your Grades/Performance Becomes Better
No more excuses about "I got caught up at home because he made me breakfast and then I fell in love all over again." Yeah, that cannot work when there is no one at your home but your dogs. Although, your dogs can make you fall in love all over again! Anyway, you see that you have more time when you are not netflixing and chilling. You see that you start to put yourself into things that may have been lacking attention. For instance your job, the thing that pays you, or your school, the thing you pay, start to become top priorities. Your performance at your job improves as well as your academics.
9. Discover New Hobbies
Wonder why you never picked up a book? Maybe because you never had time or maybe it is because you just do not like reading. Either way, with all the extra time that you have for yourself you start getting a notion to try things. With trying things you find that you actually like to paint or win eating contests. You find new things that you like that you may have never found out about yourself.
10. You're In Preparation
When you're single it's because you're in preparation for something...a relationship. You are getting yourself together for someone who will wake you up with breakfast in bed, someone who will go out of their way to actually learn how to cook so they can wake you up with breakfast in bed. You are in preparation to share your life with someone who will make you laugh uncontrollably and pick you up when you're feeling down.
Don't beat yourself up when you're single. Don't rush it. Take some time, look at your options. Enjoy your life! Be happy with these moments by yourself, because once you get into a relationship you might not miss them, but you will cherish them!
