10 reasons why being sick in college sucks

As I sit here coughing up my own lung I decided why not write about the most relatable feeling amongst all college students. I don't know what it is about college but it seems to be a breeding ground for all kinds of sicknesses. The stomach bug, the flu, a cold, strep throat you name it you can catch it in college and fast. With the close quarters and everyone touching the same desks and elevator buttons catching a sickness is probably the easiest thing about college, and it sucks. In high school a day off from school meant nothing, you had your mom to take care of you and take you to the doctors simple right, but in college missing a day of class is tragic and you are on your own, no mom to make you soup or take you to the doctors. You will be making your own soup and toughing it out at the doctors solo.

1. You have to miss class.

Skipping class was once a fun idea that gave us a thrill, especially in high school taking a sick day literally had no effect on you. But now in college its actually tragic. And the scary part is even if your teacher gives you unlimited absences you begin to wish you were in that 8am math class.

2. Going to the doctors (or health center) alone.

This is honestly a horrible feeling you show up and are expected to know all those important things that your mom used to tell the doctor for you, medical history.. I don't know can I call my mom?

3. Mom can you come pick me up I'm scared?

Going on the no mom thing, yea you have no one to take care of you. Adulting 101 today I filled my own prescription at the pharmacy and made my own soup in bed, even if you're mom is 20 miles away or 200 miles away you're battling this sickness on your own this time.

4. You still have to do homework.

Another high school throw back, your teachers probably gave you like a week to turn an assignment in that you may have missed or even exempt you from it all together. Not in college. Have a paper due the next day, looks like you're doing it and going to class!

5. Food is hard.

Mom used to make you soup in bed or toast when your stomach hurt, not anymore. As a college student you learn to get creative aka ramen.

6. You can't go out.

Not only do you have the flu but now you have a severe case of FOMO. As you lay in bed dying you watch all your friends snapchat stories and begin to lose your mind.

7. You begin to be totally over Netflix.

When you finally have reached your wits end and Netflix isn't even cutting it anymore you know you are sick. When binge watching your favorite tv show becomes a chore seek medical assistance.

8. You become tired of sleeping.

This is the defining moment in a college students life. Sleep used to be something we longed for, something we loved to do. And now it sucks and all end up wanting to do is not be in bed.

9. You probably can't breathe out of at least one of your nostrils.

If this has never happened to you, you are one of the lucky ones. One of the main things that comes along with being sick in college is loosing the ability to breathe at some point.

10. Its a constant cycle.

Unfortunately college is good at keeping us close. So after your sick someone else ends up getting sick and from then on its just life.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
