The question you are asked the most when you are going to college is, "What are you majoring in?" I always respond with the usual, "Psychology with intentions of getting a Master's in Social Work." The only part of this process that isn't an always is how people respond. But most of the time I get, "That isn't a very employable, successful or well-paid career choice."
1. There are so many routes to take.
I have taken the social work route, but there
2. The classes are intriguing.
My first social science class was Sociology Criminology and it was studying criminals and the crimes they have committed and figuring out why they might have done what they did. It was such an interesting class. I also took a Family Dynamics class this last spring and it was the most exciting class I have ever taken. Maybe it is just because I like this field so much, but it is truly
3. It makes you feel better.
The idea of learning how to help people who need it is truly satisfying beyond belief. There are simply no words that can describe how that feels.
4. The people in the field are in it for good reasons.
This isn't a major you choose if you are looking for an easy way out. This major requires someone of good heart and dedication. Actually, when someone says this job is perfect for me because I have a good heart, it makes me really happy on the inside.
5. You will make friends easily .
Like mentioned in number four, these people share the same goal as you: to help people. That alone is enough to create friendships. The people in this field tend to be so friendly and happy, or at least the ones that I have met. It makes for even more fun in your classes and outside of classes.
6. There is never an end to the learning availability .
The social science field, due to it being such a wide field, has so many things to learn about. Plus, there is always someone who comes up with new theories and new "mental issues" that you can learn about, too.
7. When you feel sad you have books that can help you feel better.
Because who needs a doctor when you can help yourself?
Or you can always go to your friends, of course.
8. You can diagnose yourself with all the new things you find out might be wrong with you as you learn about them.
Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's bad. You can be seeing all of these new things that could be wrong with you or your friends. It's crazy and sometimes you start to feel super crazy, or think everyone around you is crazy. But then you have to remember, you just see things a little bit differently than others. So don't worry, you're not crazy.
9. You learn to see things a little bit differently.
When someone commits a crime, you start to wonder how they were raised and how other surroundings in their early childhood could have affected the person they are today, or how there is always a purpose behind everything everyone does. It's quite an interesting view to gain.
10. You are going into a profession that allows you to help others.
Because what else do you truly need in life?
