Very-so-often there is a piece of news that comes along that nobody expects. Normally that news is bad, but sometimes the news can be amazing. On February 29, Fox announced that they would be willing to reboot one of the greatest television series ever, "Firefly", on one condition: Joss Whedon must be available and willing to get it going.
At this point if you're not a geek you're probably asking yourself what this show is about. In essence, a crew travels across the universe getting into tricky situations, smuggling goods, and running from the threat of the Alliance. It first premiered in 2002 but was quickly canceled and only one season aired (It's on Netflix and doesn't take too long to watch). It has since become a cult phenomenon, with no hopes of ever being revived, until now. So why, after 15 years do we need this show?
1. It has Something for Everybody.
There's the dominating captain with a tender side, love, companions, action, technology, humor, flashbacks, a preacher, everything that makes for great television. It also has that certain quirky atmosphere that you don't see anymore. It's that extra little something that really strikes your interest. TV nowadays struggles to catch every viewpoint, and "Firefly" does an excellent job of that.2. It's Set in a Universe that Closely Parallels Real Life.
Part of the opening monologue contains "some rich and flush with new technologies, some not so much." Some planets are rich, others are not. We have countries with immense wealth while at the same time there are people starving and struggling to stay alive. "Firefly" shows us both worlds from one viewpoint. They don't hide the fact that some worlds are poor and others are rich. This is the kind of thing we need on television, showing us that there are different worlds out there other than our own.3. It's About Chances
Malcolm Reynolds, Captain of "Serenity", bought his ship not because he knew it would be great or because it was the fastest ship in the fleet, but because he saw the opportunity for something great to come of it. He saw the chance to make a living and to be satisfied on that ship, not to become a millionaire. The world needs more hope and chances. We often feel so down-and-out that we don't do something. We all need a reminder that if Malcolm Reynolds can survive on "Serenity", we can survive on Earth.
4. It Warns us about the Government
No, I'm not a paranoid "Millenial/ Liberal" but I must point out that the government is not in place to rule over us. it's there to govern, to make laws. The crew of Serenity are always running from the Alliance, an intergalactic government that doesn't bring too much good and rules over the galaxy. We've seen humans standing up against the government, and we must remember that we, the people, have a duty to do so. If we don't like the government, we need to let them know. "Firefly" shows us what happens if we have an all-powerful government.
5. The Technology Would be Amazing
Specifically, the TV technology. "Firefly" never had a chance to really break through in terms of technology as shows like Star Trek and movies like "Star Wars" did, and it doens't have to. Simply think of how far our technology has come over the past 15 years. The graphics would be amazing, and there wasn't much in terms of aliens (In fact, there are no aliens. All planets are populated by humans)
6. It's a Blending of Cultures
Much of the dialogue is in standard English, but bits and pieces are Chinese. This is due to when Earth-That-Was (Our Earth) was left behind to find new a new home for humanity, the two major forces behind it were the USA and China, hence the language is a mix of both. However, it's not major information that is in Chinese. Mostly jokes, insults and occasionally an instruction are presented in Chinese. " Firefly" promoted what the world needs right now: Cross-Cultural Acceptance. Not walls or travel bans. Actual cooperation between different cultures towards one common goal-humanity. This has been lost in today's society and it's really a shame. We need to work together, not fight one another.
7. We Don't Really have a TV Show to Break Barriers
As I mentioned earlier, "Firefly" never broke any major barriers. "Star Trek" had the first interracial kiss, "L.A. Law" had the first kiss between two women and "Dawson's Creek" had the first kiss between two men. There is so much going on in Hollywood today that is great, but nothing really breaks barriers. Sure some primetime shows have a gay couple or two teenage boys kissing, but nothing that is groundbreaking. "Firefly" could be that show. We could see Humans of all Genders, Sexual Orientations, whatever it may be that needs to be shown. There's not enough of that on TV nowadays and it would be nice to see more. We need a show that you need to watch when it airs.
8. It's about Family
The crew of "Serenity" are a family. They work together, fight, and laugh. Yet, they all come from different walks of life. Some were soldiers, others are companions (For the uninformed, think an elegant prostitute), others were henchmen. Heck, there's even a preacher. While shows today certainly show a bit of family interaction, many times it's actual families. " Firefly" makes a family out of random people and it works perfectly, proving that there is similarity in everybody.
9. It Shows Humans for What we Are
There's a subplot that two characters are fugitives from the Alliance. Instead of everybody being on board with that, one of the crew members sets up for them to be kidnapped by the alliance, stabbing his crew in the back. The show also features sadistic business men, crazy wives, lovers, smugglers, and empathy. Everything we, as humans, hold onto. It doesn't portray humans as "oops, I spilt some mustard". Instead, it shows us the real side of humans that sometimes we don't want to talk about but should. It makes us look at ourselves and think about who we really are and the desire to find out what kind of person we really are.10. We Just Do
Mr. Whedon, if you ever read this, consider this as me begging. Along with thousands, possibly millions of others, we all want this show to be brought back to life. We want to travel the stars with "Serenity" again, we want to feel the thrill of being spotted by the Alliance or the satisfaction of a job well done. We so desperately want it and only you can bring it back. Please, Joss, bring it back.
