Most people think of Iceland and they think its a chunk of land, covered in ice. Nothing special. But Iceland is far from "nothing special". It's one of the most majestic places on our earth. It's full of hidden beauty. From the endless waterfalls to the natural hot springs, Iceland is bound to be on your bucket list- or at least should be by the end of this article. These
1. The Locals
The Icelanders are unlike any others. They are among the kindest I know. They are unique in their own way, making the Icelandic experience all the more special. Iceland has been said to have the nicest people according to foreign tourists, and without a doubt I agree. From personal experience, the local people we encountered on our trip made the trip as amazing as it was. With only about 323,000 people inhabiting it, Icelanders are a reason alone to visit Iceland.
2. The Food
The food in Iceland is different than what we are used to for sure, but eating it is such an enriching part of the cultural learning process when in a different country. Whether trying horse for the first time, or eating lamb with a foreign flavor, Icelandic food is unique but delicious. As a person who is semi-picky, I decided to branch out and try new food on my excursions in Iceland and it was and essential.
3. Green
Iceland, ironically is one of the greenest places. All different shades of green surrounded me, blended perfectly. Mossy rocks and green grass inhabit the land. Not only is Iceland green because of its botanics, Iceland is proud and known for their avid use of geothermal and hydro power throughout the country. Iceland went green and has stayed green.
4. Reykjavik
Reykjavik is Iceland's widely known and biggest city. From it's modern architecture to it's progressive atmosphere, Reykjavik is a must see. With authentic shops and local restaurants, the city has a lot to offer. It is a definite and probable place to visit in Iceland.
5. Language
While the native language is Icelandic, most Icelanders also speak English, so a language barrier is not something to worry about. Because of TV programs and movies with only subtitles in Icelandic, as children they start to learn bits of English making it easy to communicate. It is definitely a bit of a security blanket for travelers.
6. Hot Springs
Whether it's the luxurious Blue Lagoon or the more natural and humble hot springs sporadically located around the island, Iceland is filled with geothermal heated water pools. They are great for a quick dip after a long hike, or just an amazing view, taking in the beauty of what Iceland has to offer.
7. Glaciers
The glaciers in Iceland are and extension of the beauty Iceland has to offer. Hiking up to a glacier with a pick axe and crampons is a must just to take in the view that can't be seen again.
8.The Westmann Islands
While the mainland has so much to offer, the mini islands a bit off the shore has so much to offer and is a must see. There is so much history that comes with the barely inhabited islands. Volcano Eruptions, hikes up to the top of the volcano, incredible views, the list goes on. Westmann Islands have so much to offer and were definitely a highlight of my trip.
9. Puffins
Everyone knows what a puffin is, but most likely has never seen one. In Iceland puffins are so prevalent. They are beautifully colored, and much smaller than expected. They line the cliffs near the freezing cold water. The puffins have become and unofficial trademark of the country.
10. Black Sand Beaches
Iceland has a wide variety of sightseeing spots, all equally pleasing to the eyes. The black sand beaches provide some of the most amazing views. Perfect for photography and a famous spot to visit. A definite must see.
Iceland is one of the most incredible hidden treasures on this earth, but it should not be hidden. Iceland is a must see destination, and these ten reasons are why.
