I just recently started watching Buffy The Vampire Slayer on Netflix and discovered quickly it was just the show I needed in my life. Not only does it center around a relentless heroine, but it is an incredibly written show. It has just the right amout of butt kicking, romance, teen angst and drama. Sometimes it even leaves you with the wiggins! Here are 10 reasons you should watch Buffy The Vampire Slayer:
1. Fierce Female Representation.
Between Buffy, Willow, Cordelia, Faith, and Tara each of these characters very different, all are strong, independent, smart young women who speak their minds and fight for what they believe in. Not to mention Buffy herself, who defies all stereotypes and can kick some serious butt in a mini skirt and knee high boots.
2. Giles.
There is nothing better than the adorably dorky, very British, Giles (who is Buffy's Watcher and practically lives in the Library where he works). Not only is he kind and serves as a father figure for Buffy and the rest of the Scooby gang, but he has a bit of a dark side, that serves as a riveting subplot throughout the series.
3. The Scooby Gang.
Buffy, Giles, Willow, Cordelia, and Xander are referred to as the original Scooby Gang by fans, for good reason too. The four of them hit the books and fight the vamps and keep the world from ending on more than one occasion, without them Buffy would have a lot more on her plate.
4. Buffy and Willow's Friendship.
Buffy and Willow are very different but through everything they have each other’s backs. This positive friendship between two young women is something not conveyed enough in film and television.
5. Angel.
Angel was the original, more improved Edward Cullen, but hotter. He has a dark past that inevitably catches up with him, but he spends his days helping Buffy and the Scooby Gang try to do the right thing and helps in taking down the evil vampires. Between his wrestle with guilt, his love for Buffy and all he does to be a better person, Angel is a great character with lots of depth and oh yeah, nice abs.
6. Spike.
Spike is first introduced as a villain, but the more you see of him, the more you like him. He has what people call, “The Darcy Effect”. One minute you can’t stand him, and the next you don’t know how, you find yourself attracted to his charming British accent and devilish smile.
7. The Fashion.
Between the spaghetti strap tanks, miniskirts, chokers, knee high boots, and leather jackets and pants, Buffy and the gang fight off the vampires in the most stylish way possible. Buffy’s chic wardrobe serves as great inspiration, especially as the 90’s look slowly comes back into style.
8. Willow and Tara.
Without spoiling anything, later on in the series, Willow falls in love with Tara who joins the Scooby Gang. Their relationship was the first recurring lesbian relationship on prime time network in the United States.
9. Oz.
Oz, played by the hilariously talented Seth Green, is by far the coolest and funniest of the Scooby Gang. Not to mention his sweet devotion to Willow and witty ad-lib.
10. The Social Messages.
Throughout the series, the masterful creator, Joss Whedon, makes it a point to take on various social issues through a supernatural element. He takes on issues such as domestic violence, suicide, bullying, and obviously gender equality.
