Marquette University has a unique program for current Marquette students and foreign exchange students. Global Village is a close-knit community in Campus Town West that embraces cultural sharing and allows for opportunities for personal growth for both current Marquette students and exchange students. Marquette students are called ambassadors and are paired with international students.
The community was started in 2002 by the Office of University Apartments, Office of International Education, and International Business students. The program's mission is for its participants to think outside of the lines, go beyond the borders, and to live within Global Village.
It is an amazing opportunity and you should consider living in the Village next school year as applications are now live. If you need more convincing, here are list of 10 reasons to why you should live in Global Village Marquette University.
1. Doors are always open
"Open Doors, Open floors" is a real concept and it does work in forming a close-knit community. Yes, you are living in an apartment and not a resident hall, but it is a great way to meet people and stir up conversations. After a long day of work and classes, it is nice to be able to come home and be welcomed backed.
2. Never a dull moment
There is something always going on. It can range from soccer games to swimming to shopping trips at Target to watching Pretty Little Liars or anything. There is always something to do and great people to hang out with. You will never be bored in Global Village, unless you chose not to participate in something. You get what you put into it.
3. Explore
You have called Milwaukee and Marquette University home for some years now, but have you went out and explored your home. Chances are you haven't explored it in such a way that will reveal many hidden treasures in the city of Milwaukee. These hidden treasures include but are not limited to having the oldest certified bowling alley, the Holler House, Blue's on 76th St, and the list continues.
4. Spontaneous Trips
Sometimes spontaneous trips include trips to Target, Walmart, Chicago, Devil's Lake, Texas, Toronto and etc. The list continues. The international students are only in the United States for the semester and want to travel. Last year, a group of students got into a car on Friday and drove through the night to Toronto and then came back in time for classes on Monday. Often the best times and best memories are the things in life which are unusually, random, and unplanned.
5. Cultural Cuisine
Don't be afraid to try new things and cook up something new. The first time something is new is made it may turn out half burnt, but that is okay. The smoke detectors may go off, but that is okay. You are creating memories, and enjoying cultural cuisine without having to get a passport and an airplane ticket.
6. Programs
Anything, almost anything, can be a program. One favorite program has been Friendsgiving with all the traditional fixings, with the television show Friends playing in the background. Additional programs have been salsa dancing, apartment tailgating of a Packers and Seahawks game, prom, secret Santa, and etc.
7. Cultural Differences
Living in Global Village, you will learn so much about different cultures and countries. You will also be amazed at how the United States does engage in cultural appropriation, but unlike most America you will learn about the true aspects of the culture. Global Village is one of the best places to learn about culture.
8. Late Night Talks
You will stay up late talking to your roommates...well friends. You will laugh so hard, but also talk about serious matters. They will ask for advice, you will ask for advice, and you will see that being from another country has differences, but at the end of the day you are just humans creating lasting memories and friendships.
9. Cheap Rent
You live in Campus Town West and have all your furniture and appliances provide for you without breaking the bank. There is set price for rent regardless of the amount of roommates and you don't have to endure the long and sometimes painful roommate hunt. However, if you want to live with a friend, you can do that too. The only thing that rent does not include is electricity. Better yet, you can use financial aid to pay for housing.
10. Have a Travel Abroad Experience With Not Leaving the United States.
You will feel as though you have been a part of so many countries and cultures without paying the expensive tickets to fly abroad or have to leave your family and friends. You will make friends that will last a lifetime and will give you an excuse to travel.
