10 Reasons To Have A Dog In College

While college can be a struggle at times, there are many things about college that can bring a student joy -- getting a good grade on a difficult test, being involved in an organization, or even just a cup of coffee on a stressful day. But there is one thing that can bring college students a true, pure sense of joy that nothing else I know of can provide -- dogs. I believe dogs were created by God Himself to bring happiness into people's lives. They are fluffy, cuddly, and just all around cute and adorable. But there's more to dogs than just their looks. Here are 10 reasons why every college student should own a dog.

1. They make you more responsible

Owning a dog is a big responsibility. You have to feed them, take them outside to go to the bathroom at inconvenient times, play with them, make sure they get exercise... it's not a walk in the park. Well, it can be a walk in the park if there's one nearby.

2. They will always be there for you

Need a friend? Your dog will hang out with you. Need someone to talk to? Your dog will listen. Feeling lonely? Your dog will comfort you. When you have a dog, you have a companion for life. They're not going anywhere.

3. They will make you more active

Dogs need exercise like college students need Netflix. Without it, we would be depressed. Taking your dog for a walk every day or so will keep both you and your dog happy and healthy.

4. They will help you budget your money

Owning a dog isn't cheap. Trust me. You have to buy food, treats, toys, a crate, a doggy bed, dental care items, medicine, vet visits, etc. If nothing else will keep you from spending money on stuff you don't need, having a dog needs will definitely help.

5. They will teach you patience

Dogs are generally smart animals. However, they need to be trained. The amount of training needed will depend on how old they are when you get them, but no matter how old a dog is, they will still need training to some extent. It won't be easy, and it will take a lot of patience depending on the dog, but it will definitely be worth it. Patience is a virtue. And so is a trained pup.

6. They will cuddle with you

Some dogs just love to cuddle. So if you also love to cuddle but don't have anyone to cuddle with, getting a dog may be the perfect solution for you. They are soft and warm, and won't hog all the covers or kick you out of the bed. They just want to give you all the love and cuddles you could ever want.

7. They understand your emotions

As I stated before, dogs are smart animals. Many people say that dogs are great at reading their owner's emotions. If you're happy, your dog will see this and be happy too. And if you're sad, your dog will take notice and do everything they can to make you smile again. They will lick away your tears and cuddle up to you if they see that you're feeling down in the dumps.

8. They give you something to look forward to

Everyone deserves to look forward to something at the end of the day. Whether it's down time in front of the TV or a favorite snack, having something at home that brings you happiness can help you get through the toughest of days. That being said, a dog is a great thing to look forward to. Because they will be looking forward to you too. Sometimes a dog will sit at the door from the moment you leave to the moment you get back home, just waiting to play with you and love you again.

9. They are great models for when you're feeling artsy

Dogs are one of the most adorable pets you could ever own. Therefore, that makes them great subjects for pictures, paintings, art projects, etc. Plus who doesn't love a good dog selfie?

10. They are man's best friend

No matter what happens in your life, no matter what you look like, no matter if you're a total success or a complete failure, your dog will always be your best friend. And that right there automatically makes them the best pet ever. Not only will your life improve if you get a dog, their life will improve as well. They will be gaining someone who will love and take care of them for the rest of their doggy days. By adopting from a shelter or a humane society, you could be providing a better life for a dog who has been abused or treated poorly. You could be saving a dog's life, and that, my friends, is what makes it all worth it. So, if you're even considering getting a dog, go for it! It will be one of the best decisions you ever make.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
