I remember being told that the best vacations are the ones that are only a couple of days long, like a long weekend. I beg to differ on this, but I do have to say that one of my favorite trips to take are day trips. Visiting towns and parks that are a couple of hours away makes for a fun and exciting day.
1. They tend to be inexpensive or free.
The only thing that you really have to pay for on a day trip is the transportation, whether that be gas or public transportation. A good amount of museums have free days or discount days. Walking around a new town or park is free to do and you get to see cool local areas!
2. There's usually some great historic places to visit.
There's so much history in the United States and day trips to cities like St. Augustine, Fl; Savannah, Georgia; and Galena, Il are full of rich history. You can explore old forts, school houses, and even presidents homes. A popular attraction in historic cities are ghost tours as well!
3. Great stories to tell later.
After a trip to Wisconsin, on my way back I stopped at the world's largest Culver's! You can surprise your friends with interesting stories of local places and they'll be excited to hear about the next place you plan to go to!
(Here's a picture, but the girl didn't get all of the sign)
4. You can always go back if you miss something.
If you ever run out of time or learn about a cool new thing to do after your day trip, you can always go back again. The city is pretty close by anyways so another interesting trip is always fun!
5. It's like a mini vacation, without the packing.
Not many people like to pack, so day trips take that headache out of having to pack everything and haul bags and suitcases.
6. Quality time with the ones you love.
Instead of just sitting around the house, you can go out with your family and friends and discover someplace new.
7. You don't have to plan much.
You can just jump in the car and head out on the open road to wherever. All you really need is a map and you're off! Days trips are easy because you can plan as you go.
8. Exciting new adventures.
I'm not one for hiking, but I was able to see first hand the beautiful countryside of Wisconsin and Illinois from going on a nice hike. I discovered interesting new stores, delicious local food, and beautiful architecture.
9. It clears your head.
Nothing clears your head better than a nice drive and a new location. Out on the open road with the radio blasting is a great way to relax and take your mind of things.
10. Get active.
Quick trips to a national park are great places to hike, kayak, and be engulfed in nature. You get to see beautiful sites while being healthy.
