I've never been a 'political person'. That is, I've never been one of those people that comfortably debated topics relevant in national politics or university politics. This year, after being approached by a very good friend, I decided to apply to my university's Undergraduate Student Government. Within the first couple weeks of the fall semester, I was given the position of Senator and a few weeks after that I was a vice committee chair.
Since, I have made many friends and have gotten to experience so many new things, and it has been one of the best decisions that I have made thus far in my college career. Here are ten reasons why everyone should get involved in student government.
10. You learn how your school operates.
After becoming a member of student government, I learned that I knew very little about how my university operated or that there were even a group of people whose job was to literally listen me and work with administrators to resolve issues. Student government allows college students to see first hand exactly what the higher ups do, and how decisions made on all levels affect the entire university.
9. Everyone shares a common goal.
Everyone who is in student government has one common goal: effectively represent the students in order to make college life better for all. As well as facility issues, student representatives also address social issues such as diversity, safety, and much, much more.
8. Collaboration.
Working with other organizations is a great part of the job. Both organizations get their names out there and are able to put on some really awesome programs and events.
7. Working with administrators is cool.
Although it may seem like a crazy thing, its not. Administrators know so much and have years of experience. The problem is, sometimes they don't interact with students on the same level that fellow students do, so they might be aware of some of the issues and needs students have. As representatives, we are able to bring topics and discussions to the table and most of the time, administrators are just as excited about new ideas as we are!
6. Hands on experience.
I've never had to be a teddy bear doctor, but I've done a ton of other things. As a public relations major, student government has allowed me to implement many of the things that I learn in class in real life. There are also opportunities for Political Science Majors, Engineers, Business majors, and the list goes on.
5. Meeting new people.
Meeting people is great. When you first become a college student, you usually join groups that sound familiar. In student government, you get to connect with people you never knew existed.
4. Everyone looks great in suits.
A lot of what student government does requires professional attire. But hey, there are worse things in life than walking out of a meeting looking like James Bond.
3. Your opinion is valued.
The information you gather and distribute to students allows others to feel comfortable coming to you for advice, ideas, or opinions. There are also internal debates on different topics within student government in which you input is important and taken into consideration. In the end it has the potential to impact your school in spectacular ways.
2. You can make a difference.
There is always something that can be fixed; no campus is perfect. Being able to put on programs or to write legislation that can positively effect and aid current students and those to come is one of the best feelings in the world.
1. You'll have an awesome experience.
Whether it be because of the people that you meet, the changes you make, or a combination of the two, being in a position where you have the opportunity to make an entire University a better place is incredible. I guarantee one year in student government will not be enough, you'll always want to come back for another round.
