10 Reasons To Choose Yourself

Becoming an adult can be extremely stressful. You take on several responsibilities and go through many life changes. These life changes are meant for us to reach our happiness as adults. Throughout these life changes, there are several influences you will have when it comes to making grown-up decisions. However, even if you have a huge support system of people who help you, depending on them can be hurting you in the long run. There are a million reasons you need to make your own decisions, go with your gut, and choose yourself, but here are ten:

1. You know yourself more than anyone else.

When you have to make a decision, such as whether to end a long term relationship, choose a college, or where you want to intern -- you need to make these decisions on your own and trust your gut. Only you will know how you feel about actually making the decision.

2. You’re the only one listening to everyone else’s opinion, so you can form your own.

Getting advice from a number of people is better than only getting it from one. Hearing more than one person’s opinion will allow you to take what you’ve heard to make your own decision

3. You are your biggest supporter.

There are always going to be people competing against you and hoping you will fail. You cannot depend on anyone else to lift your spirits. Be your own motivator and biggest supporter. If you can do that, you can do anything.

4. You are in control of your own life.

Don’t ever let anyone influence who you are, who you want to be, what you want to do, or what you want out of life. It’s your life; live it the way you want to.

5. You are in control of your own happiness.

People make people happy. Keep those in your life who contribute to your happiness.Outside of people – do what you love, whether that’s by working a lot and being successful, traveling, or simply enjoying your life the way you want to live it.

6. You can depend on yourself for everything and anything.

You may have life long friends and close family who will always be behind you no matter what. But at the end of the day, you cannot depend on others to make you happy, make your decisions, or determine your life. You have to depend on yourself – everyone else is there for the extra support and joy they bring to your life.

7. You can push yourself to do anything you put your mind to.

The more you push yourself, the less you’ll be disappointed in yourself. Once you see how far you can push yourself, you’ll never give up on anything you do.

8. You are the one person who will never give up on you.

You’re going to meet several people who will come and go. You’re the one person who will never give up on yourself.

9. You know your worth.

If you choose to devote your life to building yourself as the best person you can be, you’ll know your worth and never settle for less.

10. You take pride in who you are.

Never apologize for being yourself.

Choose yourself. Every. Single. Time.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
