I have been in the public education system since kindergarten, but in April or May of 2016, I made the decision to homeschool for the rest of high school. When you tell people that you're homeschooled, they automatically think of the stereotypical homeschooled kid (most of which aren't true). This is a list of a few reasons why I switched from being in the public education system to being homeschooled. Not everything on the list applies to everyone that is homeschooled, but it applies to most that are homeschooled.
1. Being able to sleep in
Personally, this is one of my favorite things about being homeschooled. Not having to hear my alarm clock going off at 6 a.m. is amazing. I'm able to get enough sleep every night to be able to function like a normal human, and not like a zombie. I can wake up when I want to, and go to sleep when I want to.
2. Learning in a way I can understand
Public school teachers teach their subjects in whatever way makes sense to them. I am more of an auditory learner, but when you're in a room with 20 or 25 other people who are making a lot of noise, hearing what the teacher is saying clearly is next to impossible. Now, I can study in complete silence or with classical music.
3. Having a flexible schedule
Having multiple medical problems means a lot of doctors appointments. Constantly having to go to doctors appointments made me miss a lot of class time, and sadly my grades showed it. I'm now able to go to doctors appointments and not have to worry about what information I'm missing. I ended up going to physical therapy four times a week, just imagine how much time in class I missed each week.
4. The food
A major perk of being homeschooled, you can eat whatever you want, whenever you want. I have had to eat "lunch" as early as 10:00 a.m. and as late as 1:30 p.m. The food at the public elementary and middle schools I attended was awful. Now, I can eat food that actually tastes good.
5. You don't waste time
In all of my classes, the teachers gave us busy work. Most public school kids can agree with this, we all had that one teacher that would give you multiple worksheets that didn't really relate to what was being taught. Or you finish your assignment that was given to you before everyone else has finished theirs, so you just have to sit there and wait. Now instead of doing school work for about 7 hours, I can finish my work is about 4 or 5 hours.
6. Learning what I want to learn
The electives that are offered through the public education system can be fun, but most of the time they don't have classes on the information you want to learn about. I love almost anything that has to do with the medical profession, and the school I went to didn't really have a lot of classes that specialized in the medical field.
7. Being able to do school with pets
How often can you say you got to bring your pet(s) to school with you? Never. When you're homeschooled, your pet(s) are almost always with you. It's fun to have them with you and it can be really relaxing too.
8. Reading books
So, this one may be a little odd, but it makes sense. When you're homeschooled you can read whatever book you want to. Some of the books that you have to read in English or Language Arts class can be so boring and uninteresting.
9. Not having to be confined to a classroom
Your classroom when you're homeschooled can be anywhere you want it to be. The kitchen, bedroom, living room, backyard, a tree house, in a car, etc.
10. Doing school in your PJs
I don't think I really need to say anything about this one.
These are just a few reasons why I decided to switch from being in public school to being homeschooled. As I said not all of these apply to all homeschooled kids, but they apply to me.
