10 Reasons Why Spring Isn't So Bad At Penn State

Fall semester sets high expectations for the spring, but Penn State lives up to them.

10 Reasons Why Spring Isn't So Bad At Penn State
Penn State

1. Spring Break.

Not only is spring break the perfect time to hang out with your friends on a tropical island or a beach somewhere, but it’s also a whole week off from school, work, and other assignments. Plus once spring break comes, you know the semester is halfway over and you can power through it.

2. The Anticipation of Summer.

Once spring hits, it’s only a matter of time before summer. And summer means no school, no exams, no studying, no homework. As much as we all love Penn State, we all can’t wait until summer comes and we can finally relax on vacation.

3. The Weather.

Once the weather finally turns and all the snow has melted, it is the perfect temperature to walk around campus. It’s not as hot as fall semester which means you aren’t sweating as much walking from class to class and up Shortlidge Hill.

4. Creamery Ice Cream.

It’s finally acceptable to eat ice cream in public. No longer will people judge you as they see you walking into Berkey Creamery since it’s warmer out. Nothing like getting a stare down walking into the Creamery when its below freezing and the wind is blowing at 30 mph. Not anymore.

5. Blue and White Weekend.

This is the one weekend students look forward to most during spring semester (besides THON.) It’s been a whole semester without Penn State football and this is the closest we get until the following fall. Needless to say, students live for this weekend.

6. Hub Lawn and Old Main.

Studying and doing homework outside is finally possible. There’s nothing like sitting on HUB lawn or Old Main lawn while doing homework or just simply laying down, tanning, or napping. You can also go on Old Main lawn with some friends to either kick around a soccer ball or throw some frisbees.

7. Internships and Jobs.

After a winter full or stressful interviews and traveling, upperclassmen start hearing back about internships for the summer and jobs after graduation. Even though no senior wants to graduate and think about starting life in the real world, it’s still exciting to hear you’ve got a job before graduating college.

8. No More Frackets.

This is a big deal for girls going out on the weekends. No longer is it cold enough to have to wear a fracket every weekend when you go out. No more worrying about getting a fracket at the end of the night or shivering back to the dorms. It’s time for tank tops and crop tops.

9. Flowers.

Once the flowers start to bloom, you don’t even mind walking 20 minutes to class because it’s so pretty around campus. You look forward to seeing the tulips and daisies sprouting around buildings, especially in Millennium Science Complex’s garden.

10. Scheduling Classes.

Spring is the time to start scheduling classes for fall semester. Thinking about starting a new semester with a clean slate is refreshing after a strenuous spring semester. And fall semester means football season. Enough said.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
