I know what you're thinking: "Why would anyone pay $35 to have colored powder thrown in their face while jogging?" Although this statement is somewhat true, there are plenty of reasons why I would gladly pay for this incredible experience. I'll be doing my first Color Run next month and I thought I'd share what convinced me to sign up for quite possibly the messiest thing I will ever do.
1. You don't have to be a "runner."
I enjoy running (I know, shocker), but by no means am I actually "5K material." To participate in the Color Run, you don't have to have any athletic talent whatsoever. Yes, you heard me right. You actually have the option of running, walking or doing a little bit of both. You could totally walk the whole thing and no one would judge you, I promise.
2. It's not timed.
This is pretty awesome considering it actually forces you to enjoy the whole experience without being worried about how much you've completed. Why would you want to rush through the race when you're having such a good time, anyway?
3. It turns into a dance party.
If you've ever wondered what it would be like to go straight from a 5K to a rave, look no further than the Color Run. After you cross the finish line, there's a huge stage with music blasting. At the beginning of the race, each runner is given a color packet specifically for the after-party festivities. Every 15 minutes, a "Color Throw" occurs and everyone throws their packets in the air. Most of the pictures you've seen from the Color Run feature these insane clouds of vibrant hues. Out of all the previous Color Run participants I've talked to, each one has said this was their favorite part of the race.
4. The color powder is safe.
In case you were concerned about it, the color powder is actually 100 percent naturally dyed cornstarch. I'm not saying this will make it any easier to get off of your body, but it certainly won't hurt you. You may have a faded blue streak in your hair for the next week, but consider it a souvenir for a job well done.
5. You get to take the best before and after pictures.
Did you even do the Color Run if you didn't take before and after pictures for Instagram? I love this idea because everyone looks completely different afterward. Not just because you're covered head to toe in bright colors, but no two people look the same. You may have more pink than you would have liked while your friend may resemble a blue monster. The good thing is you can gladly share colors with other participants if they're willing enough.
6. You can wear costumes (if you want).
As if the race couldn't get any more unique, the Color Run actually sells tutus on its website. Yup, you could run in a tutu and get away with it. I'm not sure if I'd do it, but for those of you who are bold enough, I say go for it.
7. You get to be a kid again and get messy for absolutely no particular reason.
You know that feeling you get when you enter the gates of Disney World? Well, this is pretty close. I mean, how many chances do you get to make a mess and actually get away with it? Not very many. At least, not in my childhood. As an adult, those chances become even slimmer. Don't you want to get messy when it's totally acceptable? I know I do.
8. You'll have so much fun, you'll forget you're working out.
If only this were always the case. Even if you hate working out, I strongly recommend the Color Run. It doesn't feel like much of a workout, which makes it great for beginners.
9. It's perfect for groups/families.
I definitely believe in doing the Color Run with at least one other person. It is much more fun having someone rooting for you the entire time. When you're doing a regular 5K, it's difficult to run in groups because it's more competitive. The Color Run makes it much easier to stay with your group throughout the race.
10. It's not something you can do every day.
I honestly wish it was, but typically the Color Run only visits your city one to two times per year. If you're looking to step out of your comfort zone then this is the perfect thing to try. It's not life-threatening, yet it's still "bucket list-worthy." Think of it this way: You are buying an experience that creates unforgettable memories. Experiences are only going to further your development as an individual. Material things don't even come close. Even if it doesn't live up to your potential, at least, you were brave enough to try something new.
