With the whirlwind of information on the internet about the "Gilmore Girls" revival, I was prompted to re-watch the seven seasons of "Gilmore Girls" that are so conveniently available on Netflix. I was never old enough to watch the series when it originally premiered, but by the time I reached my teenage years, re-runs had me hooked. I always admired Rory and Lorelai as powerful females, but now that I had experienced the horrors of high school and was living through earning my own Bachelors degree in journalism, I understood so much more. While I was viewing Stars Hollow through a new, adult point of view, I realized the importance of what Rory Gilmore represents to young women everywhere.
These are the top 10 reasons why Rory Gilmore would be my, (and many others) best friend:
1. Books, Books and more Books!
Like Rory Gilmore, I would rather stay in on a Friday night and read! Burying oneself in a pile of literature is the best form of therapy! Lorelai mentions Rory's intense reading habits multiple times across the span of the series and Rory never sways from her love of books.
2. Not a typical college student.
Rory doesn't spend much time at parties or drowning herself in alcohol. Most of her time is spent studying and trying to find part-time jobs to fund her coffee addiction. It's a refreshing and authentic look at someone who's actually in college to learn.
3. Focused, goal-oriented journalist.
Most college kids are worried about the cutest outfit they can put together for this weekend's party. Rory worries about how many books she can consume in her years spent at Yale.
4. Immaculate taste in old movies.
The Gilmore Girls are known for the amount of time they spend in front of the television set. It's always fun to re-watch some old episodes where Rory and Lorelai wander around their local video store in the hopes of finding something classic.
5. Independent and unwavering.
Even though Rory goes through some boys in her high school and college years, she is very sure of where she wants to end up. Although there was that one time she stole a yacht with Logan and dropped out of Yale, Rory accomplishes the goal she set out to do.
6. A symbol for young women everywhere.
In a world where pressuring young women perpetually to be perfect in every aspect physically possible, Rory keeps her eyes on the prize. Intelligence is more important to Rory, and she makes that known throughout the series.
7. Realistic.
I love Gilmore Girls for many reasons, but the feelings that Rory experiences while going through Yale really resonate with me. Rory encounters many challenges through her college years, and the show displays the trapped feeling of higher education very well.
8. Like every young woman, she needs her mom.
After you get over the "oh goodness mom, you're so embarrassing," phase, most young women realize their mothers are actual a wealth of knowledge and a good sense of direction. Outside of a few rare occasions, Rory keeps her mom close.
9. Great fashion sense.
That is, after private school. After the uniform days, Rory grows up a little bit and her fashion sense is on point. Every young woman could look to Rory for great fashion inspiration and professional looks.
10. Caffeine dependence.
Coffee is everything to the Gilmore Girls. Rory and I share a passionate love for coffee in every form.
