When you first come to college, staying on campus is pretty conventional and convenient. Not only are you in a new environment, but you're being exposed to new people and experiences. But after your first year...? What's the point of staying on campus? Here's 10 reasons for you to reconsider staying on campus another year.

1. It's cheaper to stay off campus

You end up paying $5,000 or more to live in a dormitory with rules, and regulations. After your first year, you have an understanding of how to be an adult. If you don't, this is the perfect chance. You'd save thousands of dollars staying in an apartment as opposed to staying in university housing.

2. You get your own space

For the college kids who grew up in households with many siblings, we firmly understand how to share our belongings, as well as our space. Now, you're paying thousands to share a space...AGAIN. If you're going to spend that much, you might as well have your own room, bathroom and not have to depend on anyone else.

3. You learn responsibility

With an apartment comes bills. Yes, I know. Bills are something that I try to pretend don't exist, but they do in the real world. Eventually, you're going to have to pay them. Getting your own place makes you learn how to manage your money, as well as your place.

4. Fire drills and fire alarms will be a thing of the PAST!

Nothing is more annoying then being midway through blow drying your hair and the fire alarm goes off. No, your blow dryer wasn't on high heat. But the university must keep the sensors sensitive in order to keep us safe. But, how are you supposed to ever get your hair done on a timely manner without setting off alarms?

5. You can choose your roommate, or not have one at all

Rather than having to be stuck with a random selection, you get the leisure of choosing who lives with you or having no one to live with at all.

6. You can be as picky as you want

Now that you're spending your OWN money to live somewhere, you can choose wherever you'd like and YES you can be picky. You can pick and choose places as you'd like, rather than be limited to the options at your school.

7. You are your own manager

You know longer have to go to hall meetings, report to RAs and adhere to rules that may restrict you.

8. If you're 21... you can consume and have alcohol at your place

At the age of 21 you are well aware of how to take care of yourself. With your own place you get to fully exercise your rights as a 21-year-old adult.

9. Your parents will start treating you like an adult

As your parents notice how serious you are about having your own place and managing it successfully, they'll start to realize you're not a little girl/boy anymore and FINALLY treat you that way.

10. It's a part of growing up

Eventually, you're going to have to get your own place, move out and pay bills. So, why not now? Better two steps ahead than two steps behind.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
