When I say I have watched The Mummy (1999) a thousand times, I am probably actually underestimating it. My grandparents drug me to see it when I was four. I threw a fit walking in, but after the first scene, I fell in love. In my humble opinion, it is the best movie. It has everything: true love, adventure, British accents, mythology, questions about your very mortality. I could watch The Mummy for all eternity.
When I watch The Mummy, I usually tweet about it because I have a lot of thoughts on it. People have asked me to #livetweet watching it. That is how I came about thinking about putting my thoughts down more formally.
The reviews were fairly mixed. Even some of the good reviews went on to say that they were not sure why they liked it at all, but they were pleased. So, here is a rather expert guide to watching The Mummy and the best things about it.
1. Brendan Fraser as Rick will ruin all men for you, ever.
2. Rachel Weisz as Evelyn will ruin all women for you, ever.
3. Now as I look at it as an adult, Imhotep is goals.
Your first instinct is to hate him. He kills the Pharoh and later tries to rule all of mankind. Critically analyzing it, though, he kills the man who hurts his love. He just loves Anck Su Namun and wants to rule the world. Those aren't bad goals. Actually, all I want in a man. He didn't even want the world until he was killed, kind of unjustly, and cursed to destroy the world. He was a pretty good guy before this, and not to mention a great boyfriend!
4. Anck Su Namun is pretty rad.
"My body is no longer his temple" *kills herself* It seems dumb, but she was basically a sex slave to the pharaoh. Anck Su Namun is a Feminist figure, and I don't even care what you have to say about it.
5. Evie is also a great Feminist figure.
She goes out and plays adventurer in the 1920's when this would not be done normally. She fights for her place among the scholars and cowboys, and she eventually proves herself. Her passion for Egyptology is contagious.
6. The most unrealistic part of the Mummy is the bookshelf scene.
Also, the siblings getting along so well.
7. The best damn part of the whole movie, though, is when the ship is on fire.
"Hey, O'Connell looks to me like I've got all the horses!"
"Hey, Beni looks to me like you're on the wrong side of the river!"
Pure poetry.
8. Half Egyptian, but all white cast?
Also, the only Egyptian characters are all very racist and stereotypes. So, not A+ on the social justice. The people of color are pretty much all idiotic or like warriors in an ancient order. This isn't exactly the best picture in the world. Although all the major poor decisions are done by white Americans, the details aren't great.
9. Cats help save the world.
Before Imhotep can fully regenerate, cats scare him away. If it wasn't for his fear of felines, Evie would probably be dead.
10. The movie never takes itself too seriously.
Clearly, not a horror film, and with half the cast as Cowboy-esque characters, there is very little room for serious dialogue and issues. The special effects aren't wonderful, but you know, they put someone's face in a sandstorm so, whatever. Fraser said he would only take the role of Rick if he could be kind of jovial in playing the role. He thought if he took the role too seriously it would come off too cheesy, and I think he was right.
