My dearest sister,
We've come a long way, haven't we? From bratty little kids to slightly-less bratty young adults, we haven't managed to kill each other yet (and not for lack of trying). We've survived each other's company for quite some time now. Despite our outrageous arguments and the inevitable rough patches all siblings face, we still love each other, and here's why:
1. We have each other's backs.
Punch a hole in the wall? No sweat, it was brother's fault. Just make sure you cover for me next time I'm accused of eating dad's leftovers.
2. You're the best excuse.
That creepy kid won't quit asking for a date? "Sorry, I've got to drive my sister to practice all week."
3. We watch the same TV shows.
When nobody else understands what I'm talking about when I say that the cliffhanger on the mid-season finale of "Arrow" was ridiculous, I can just call you up. And I agree, there's never too much Olicity.
4. We love the same music
While I found it obnoxious that you always had to like the same bands that I did growing up, I now fully appreciate the fact that I have someone who will dance and scream the lyrics with me to my favorite songs.
5. Family values.
Nobody out here at school can confirm whether or not what dad said was true about brother but a quick text and voila: I have my own personal spy on the inside of all the family drama.
6. Your closet is my closet.
Why go shopping for a new top when I can just check your closet and grab what I want? If nothing in my wardrobe looks appealing, I can just go shopping in yours. The only downside to this is when my closet becomes your closet. I was planning on wearing that dress today, but it's kind of hard to when you're already walking out the door wearing it.
7. We share obsessions.
This becomes very convenient when my roommate can't stand my random outbursts of songs from the "Hamilton the Musical" cast album. I can just Skype you and we can discuss the importance of comma placement, and attempt to rap "Guns and Ships."
8. We remember the little things.
From reminding mom that you wanted trail mix when we go to the grocery store to celebrating my A on that test because I told you how nervous I was about it, it's nice to have someone to remember the small things.
9. I can tell you anything.
We just grow closer and closer the older we get. At this point, I could probably tell you that I needed your help hiding a dead body and you'd just say "when and where?"
10. Our shared history.
Nobody else will fully appreciate the story about that time I lost my phone in the Paris airport, or about everything that happened that summer when we were in the community theater production of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory because they weren't there. We experienced so much together growing up, and we know more about each other than anyone else.
We've grown from the days when I couldn't stand to be seen with you to now when every time I leave home to come back to school I'm nearly brought to tears.
I would have never thought that I'd rely on you so much when we were younger, or that we would share so much with each other. I thought we would be those siblings that grew up distanced from one another, only to see each other on holidays. I'm so glad that we're not. We're closer now than ever, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
