10 Reasons To Love Lana Del Rey

We don't just love her because she's young and beautiful.

I have a somewhat unhealthy obsession with Elizabeth Woolridge Grant. From her classic '60s appearance to her ambient music, I was hooked from “Video Games” on. She’s basically a more mature Taylor Swift with a more unique sound. Yet, Lana Del Rey doesn’t get enough credit for her honest lyrics and instead has been prone to constant criticism for her looks and lyrical messages. So this is just a small defense and tribute to basically my favorite artist/person ever.

1. No, all of her songs do not sound the same.

Every single song of hers has something different. Her latest album had clarinet, saxophone, horns, violins, cellos, electric guitars, bongos, and even a snake-charming wind instrument. There is nothing unoriginal about a snake-charming wind instrument.

2. She isn't a "submissive girlfriend."

I mean, the woman shoots down helicopters when she gets cheated on. T-Swift has nothing on this.

3. She doesn't have the typical Hollywood look, and she owns it.

Lana Del Rey is neither a size 2 nor a platinum blonde. She has the most distinctive look that parallels her distinct music.

4. Her lyrics do not promote violence towards women.

In many of her songs, such as "Ultraviolence" or "Honeymoon," domestic violence is the underlying motif. But this is a true issue in society, and Lana is explaining the point of view of a woman who doesn't understand how to be treated well. She isn't condoning violence; she's only explaining the woman's viewpoint in a way that most of us cannot relate to.

5. She uses her fame to give back.

Lana Del Rey suffered from alcohol abuse as a teenager. Now she helps open up foundations to care for homeless people.

6. She does whatever makes her happy.

Lana loves poetry and even wanted to be a poet when she grew up. Now, she casually records poetry and puts it on her albums, even at her manager's disapproval.

7. Her confidence is contagious.

She owns every word she sings, and it makes you feel like you can too. Even if you happen to be tone-deaf and could never pull off the flower crown.

8. She had stage fright but worked through it.

Lana didn't let her fear stand in the way of making it to the top, and now she's the most streamed female artist on Spotify.

9. Her goal is to turn her life into a work of art.

Everything she does is supposed to be brilliant and beautiful. Doesn't sound like a bad way to try to live.

10. She's the queen.

I don't think I need to explain this.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
