10 Reasons You Love/Hate Recruitment

It's all fun and games until the recruitment chair starts yelling.

10 Reasons You Love/Hate Recruitment

Before you know it, summer will be over and that means it's time for recruitment to take over every second of your life. Part of you is unbelievably excited for it to start, but part of you is majorly dreading every second of it. These are the main reasons why we all feel this way.

Reasons You Love Recruitment

1. The Free Shirts

It's a given that sorority girls LOVE the gear, I mean you can never have too many shirts, fanny packs, backpacks and snapbacks am I right? However, you don't love spending every penny in your bank account on gear. So recruitment is great because all of the shirts you're supposed to wear are given to you, for free!

2. Bonding With Your Sisters

Spending every minute of every day with these girls for two weeks is the best time to seriously bond. It's the perfect opportunity to find out all of the dirty details, like that time they snuck a guy into the house, or the crazy things they did during their semester abroad. A game of "never have I ever" with a group of older and younger girls in your sorority is always a good idea.

3. Pictures

Everyone is primped to their absolute cutest, with their hair done and their spray tans looking fresh. It's the perfect time for pictures in all of your matching outfits with your BFFs. Plus, you're likely to get the most Instagram likes on that group picture you posted during recruitment, because every girl in the house is posting basically the same pictures, and everyone is feeling particularly generous with their likes.

4. You Meet Some Awesome Girls

Having a rush crush is no joke. Sometimes you meet a girl (or a few) and you hit it off so incredibly, you just can't imagine what life would be like without them in your house. Even better, when the conversation just flows so naturally that you don't have to use any of your girl flirting tricks on them! You may even meet your future little or grand little and there are few things in this world more exciting than that feeling.

5. Bid Day

There's nothing like working your butt off for weeks and seeing it all pay off! You obviously got a killer pledge class, you just hugged your rush crush/future little and now it's time to throw on that flower crown and celebrate because you survived!

Reasons You Hate Recruitment

1. Crying

Every. One. Cries. Like all the time. Maybe it's all of the estrogen building up in the room combined with the exhaustion and the fact that everyone is cranky from lack of sleep. Whatever the reason, everyone cries at least once or twice....a day.

2. Your Mouth Hurts From Smiling

This sounds like a joke, but by the end of the day the muscles around your mouth are literally sore from smiling so hard and for such long periods of time. When the day is over, all you can do is sit there with resting bitch face to give the muscles a break.

3. Drama

Yes you all love each other, but when you stick 100+ girls in a room together for two weeks, there WILL be drama. Maybe someone stole somebody's hair brush or maybe someone stole somebody's rush crush. It doesn't matter the reason, drama is bound to occur, cat fights will break out, and everyone will be completely over it by the time the next set starts.

4. Buying Recruitment Outfits

Over the summer you're bombarded with email after email about what you have to wear during recruitment. This means going shopping and buying things you'll literally never wear again (like cheetah heels, yikes), at least not until next years recruitment.

5. Voting

How are you supposed to make a decision about a girl based on talking with her for 5 minutes! Making a split second decision about someone can be stressful and confusing. It becomes 10 times worse when you absolutely love a girl, you give her the highest vote possible and talk her up to all your friends, but she doesn't come back the next day. You're beyond crushed and maybe even a little offended that she didn't like you as much as you liked her. The whole voting thing pretty much sucks.

As much as you hate some aspects of recruitment, it's all worth it in the end because you love your sisters, you love your sorority and now you have all of these new, incredible girls that will love it just as much as you do.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
