Before Netflix debuted its streaming services in 2007, "binge-watching" an entire television series in a weekend wasn't a thing—the word "binge-watch" didn't really hit the scene until Netflix started releasing multiple episodes simultaneously in 2013. Thanks to Netflix, I have had the ability to binge-watch multiple television series in the past couple years (I'm not a couch potato I swear). From "Gossip Girl," to "One Tree Hill," to "Gilmore Girls," to "The Vampire Diaries," I have been blessed to watch some of the most amazing television series with some of the most unique plotsand diverse characters. Although I can't speak for anyone else, I feel like a lot of people have a "spirit" television series —a television series that truly speaks to them and a television show that touches their life. Thanks to Netflix, my spirit series is "Gilmore Girls." In honor of the recent debut of "Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life," here are 10 reasons why I love "Gilmore Girls." Forewarning: There are some spoilers in this article so if you haven't finished the series, I recommend you stop reading unless you don't mind a few spoilers.
1. Lorelei Gilmore proves that it's okay for a woman to be single and independent
Although Lorelei dated Max, Luke, and Christopher, got engaged to Max and Luke, and married Christopher, her character ended the series as a single woman. Besides the few relationships she was in throughout the series, Lorelei was a single woman for a majority of the show. In a society where being an unmarried, single woman as an adult is so frowned upon—or just being a single woman in general—Lorelei proves that it's okay for a woman to be single and independent. She is an inspiration and exemplifies the strength and power a single woman can have; she proves that a woman doesn't need a man to prove her worth.
2. The series honors forgiveness
Throughout the show, there were a variety of arguments and bickering. Throughout the show, there were times when characters would avoid each other because they were angry with one another and there were times when characters would stop being friends. An example of this was when Luke and Lorelei stopped being friends after they ended their engagement. Although it was awkward for a while and they weren’t friends for a while, they eventually made amends and forgave one another. Another example of this is the relationship because Emily and Lorelei. Although they constantly bickered (especially at Friday night dinners) throughout the show, they made amends every time and learned to tolerate each other. “Gilmore Girls” proves that despite any argument or altercation you have with someone, you don’t have to hold a grudge; you can forgive them.
3. The dialogue
This series is known for its sarcasm and hilarious one-liners and fast dialogue. This series is practically based on sarcasm and that’s what makes it so enjoyable and that’s why I love it so much. The sarcasm and hilarious one-liners is one of the main reasons why I fell in love with this series. I can always count on "Gilmore Girls" to brighten my day just by some of the dialogue featured in the show. "Gilmore Girls" is the definition of sarcasm because everyone does it and we can't help but smile every time we watch this show. Fun fact: Most shows run through 45-50 pages of script for a one-hour television program. However, an average script for “Gilmore Girls” was 75-80 pages because of how fast all the character’s talk.
4. Coffee, coffee, coffee
It's not an episode of "Gilmore Girls" without a cup of coffee or visit to Luke's diner do a cup of coffee. Coffee for breakfast, coffee for lunch, coffee for dinner and coffee anywhere in between. Coffee is the biggest trademark in the show and Lorelei can't live without it.
5. The series proves that love takes time
Lorelei dated Max, Luke, and Christopher, got engaged to Max and Luke, and married Christopher, and she ended the series as a single woman. Rory dated Dean, Jess, and Logan and also ended the series as a single woman. This series proves that love takes time—you can't win them all and you won't always find "the one," even after a few tries.
6. The mother-daughter relationship
Lorelei and Rory have a relationship like no one else. Their relationship is an inspiration because they are incredibly close, they're always there for one another, they understand each other's sarcasm and quirky habits like no one else, and they are each other's best friends and biggest supporters
7. Lorelei Gilmore
Lorelei Gilmore is the definition of optimism and quirky. I love her quirky antics throughout the show, like her love for snow, especially the first snowfall, and how she has to stand outside and be present in the midst of the first snowfall. Lorelei doesn't dwell on the past or live for the future, she lives in the present and takes life one day at a time. I also admire the fact that she lives by her own rules; she doesn't live for anyone but herself. Although she experiences trials and errors and sadness through the show, Lorelei is an inspiration to us all; she views life with a different perspective and if we strived to view life like she does, maybe we would all be happy as she is.
8. The series makes me happy
Some people go shopping or eat ice cream when they're upset or having a bad day; I watch "Gilmore Girls." From the quirky townspeople, to the morning's spent in Luke's diner, to the sarcasm and hilarious one-liners, to the love the characters have for one another, I can't help but smile every time I watch "Gilmore Girls."
9. The townspeople
The townspeople of Stars Hollow are what makes Star Hollow feel like home. Luke and Taylor's constant bickering? Miss Patty and Babette's constant gossip about the town drama? Luke's angst and annoyance with a majority of his customers? Taylor's quirky habits, like using the entire budget for Springfest and construction a maze made out of hay that goes through the entire city? The fact that everyone knows Mrs. Kim as the crazy woman who owns an antique furniture store? The constant bickering and chatter that occurs at a town hall meeting? The fact that Miss Patty's choice of discussion is talking about all the men she's been with or her history as a Broadway star? The fact that Rory is the golden girl in town and everyone is rooting for her? Kirk. Need I say more? Sookie's generosity and desire to cook and bake for everyone all the time? The townspeople of Stars Hollow are what makes Star Hollow feel like home.
10. Stars Hollow
Stars Hollow, the town where everyone knows each other. Stars Hollow, the town where everyone is there for each other all the time, 100 percent. Stars Hollow, the town notable for their gazebo and quirky festivals like Knitathon. Stars Hollow, the town where Luke's diner is a hot-spot all the time and the town hall meetings are a hot spot on a Friday night. Stars Hollow, the close-knit community and town that makes everyone feel at home. Stars Hollow, the fictional town we have all come to know and love. Stars Hollow, the place that feels like home.
