10 Reasons To Become A Clio
Brianna Zakala

Unless you go to SUNY Geneseo, you are most likely not aware of what a Clio is. Alpha Clio, also known as Phi Kappa Pi is a local sorority that was founded in 1872 being Geneseo's first social organization. If you do go to SUNY Geneseo and are familiar with our sorority, then consider yourself lucky. If you're an active member or alumni of Alpha Clio, you'll understand every bit of this article, and for those who are considering Greek life, here are the top 10 reasons to become a Clio.

10. “Yeah, I’ll try it.”

Known as our infamous answer to everything, no matter what it may be.

9. Pearls? No, daisies.

When you think sorority events, you think of girls dressed to the nines with pearls around their neck. When you’re a Clio, a daisy in your hair is the only accessory you need.

8. Established in 1872.

What’s cooler than being the first Greek organization to exist on your campus? This isn't just a year, but it's the year that the endless traditions began. What our sorority does and takes pride in now, are the same things that the sisters were doing way back in 1872.

7. Actually, being small isn't so bad.

We’ve all been asked why we chose Clio when it’s so small. But really, being “so small” is one of my favorite aspects about it. I know everything about each girl in my sorority and I can count on any of them. I can truly call each girl in the sorority not only my sister, but a best friend. There are no acquaintances in this family. Do you even know who you pledged with?

6. Yes, DK (Delta Kappa Tau) is our frat brother.

While you are all bored after 2 a.m. here at Geneseo, because that’s when the only bar here closes (or while you’re bored on a Monday night), you can catch us in the DK mansion. Everyone knows Clio and DK are brother and sister, but I couldn’t tell you any of the other brother sister Greek organizations here. I guess not only are we blessed with sisters forever, but brothers forever too.

5. Clios remain elevated.

You might not understand this, unless you’re a Clio. We like to be elevated no matter where it may be. Whether it’s on top of a table, on a bar top, or on a stage, you’ll always catch us elevated. The best are always on top, right?

4. No shame.

What you would consider an embarrassing moment, we would be proud of. Shameless and proud.

3. "She's not my big, she's my mom."

Of course, every sorority has bigs and littles and mostly everyone knows what that means. But Clio does it a little different. We take pride in our mother daughter day tradition. No bigs here, just moms. And, yes, all us kiddies scream mom when our mother arrives.

2. We earned it.

No, our pledging didn’t just consist of one weekly dinner with our pledge class. We spent hours each day with our pledge class and our soon-to-be sisters. We often wondered why we had to spend so much time with each other. Now, we are each other’s world and even though pledging is over, we are all still attached to the hip, which has led us to finally understand what we couldn't before. We weren’t just given our place in this sorority; we earned it and could never be more proud.

1. Everyone knows your name.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
