We all love our homes, for better or for worse. I grew up in Juneau, Alaska, and now that I live in New York City I have a new perspective on Alaska and why I love it (although I like New York too!). So here is a list for those of you who are curious about the largest and northernmost of the United States' fifty states. Or maybe you are also from Alaska and can appreciate these things the way I have come to.
1. Northern Lights
One of Alaska’s most famous attractions is the Aurora Borealis, also known as the Northern Lights. They are seen most frequently in towns farther north like Barrow and Fairbanks, but they can be seen throughout Alaska on a good night.
2. The Permanent Fund Dividend
The PFD! This yearly check was made infamous by “The Simpsons Movie.” Basically, residents of Alaska receive money indirectly from oil revenue each year. In 2015, the amount was $2,072!
3. Wildlife
The wildlife is part of everyday life in Alaska. Even though we do not ride polar bears around, you are pretty much guaranteed a moose sighting if you are in the Anchorage area! You’ll definitely see bald eagles if you are in Southeast Alaska, near the coast, or by any body of water.
4. The Alaskan Brewing Company
If you don’t know about the Alaskan Brewing Company then you aren’t a true Alaskan. The brewery makes award-winning beer from all sorts of "Alaskan” ingredients such as spruce tips and coffee (Alaska runs on the stuff). Perhaps more iconic than the beer are the sweaters which are proudly worn by any and all self-respecting Alaskans.
5. Cleanliness
This might be due to the small population, but Alaska is one of the cleanest places I have ever been within the United States (yes, it is part of the U.S.). The fresh air, waterfalls that you can drink from, and crystal clear lakes contribute to the state’s wilderness-oriented vibe and overall appeal.
6. Community
Alaska has a small population for such a large state. With the largest city being home to just over 300,000 people and the capital at about 32,000, Alaska can seem like a much smaller place because of the tight-knit community that has been built by its small population.
7. Snow sports
If you are a fan of skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, or even sledding, then you NEED to experience an Alaskan winter! We have world-renowned ski resorts and “ski bums” everywhere!
8. Nature
Aside from wildlife, you will find yourself constantly surrounded by nature in Alaska! Whether you’re in Southeast Alaska, home to the nation’s largest national forest, or in Fairbanks where you can see Mount Denali, there are always natural landmarks and parks surrounding you.
9. Ice-breaker
If you aren’t particularly good at conversation ice-breakers and happen to be from Alaska then you are in luck, because your state of residence is a great one! People are always curious about Alaska and will definitely ask you a lot of silly questions about it! Examples of questions not to ask an Alaskan include: “What currency do you guys use?”, “Do you live in an igloo?”, and “So do you love Sarah Palin?”
10. Adventure
Living in such a large and unpopulated state allows for a constant sense of adventure. So much of Alaska is left unexposed to the outside world, and there is always a new place to explore. If you love to hike to mysterious and beautiful places then you’ll love Alaska!
