10 Things Liberal Arts College Students Will Understand

Okay, let's face it, if you're planning on going to a liberal arts college, you might have to explain two things. First, you're going to have to explain what that is, and second, what you plan on doing with that degree. Liberal arts colleges have a lot to offer their students, though, and here is just a short list.

1. Small classes

So, you might not be able to hide from your professor at a liberal arts college, but this just means that you have a go-to person who actually cares.

2. Critical thinking

The professors at liberal arts colleges care about your opinion. Most classes are not taught in a top-down lecture style because what you have to say as a student matters. Because of this, students are encouraged to develop not only their mode of formulating opinions, but the way they present their arguments to other people.

3. Most of the schools are basically Hogwarts

I don't know what it is about liberal arts colleges and gothic architecture, but just walking up the stairs makes me feel like they might change on me.

4. Small Community

Just like with the professors, you can't hide from your fellow students. You will have three classes with the same person. You will forget what their name is even though you spend most of your day with them.

5. You become a jack of all trades

Liberal arts colleges tend to focus on allowing students to take courses in multiple disciplines. This means that there is tons of flexibility and you tend to pick up on a lot of things that you might not have at a larger university.

6. You are prepared for the work force

Because liberal arts students spend most of their time writing papers and speaking up in class, they are already being trained in great tactics for being a great member of a team.

7. The focus isn't on building workers

A liberal arts education might prepare you to work, but that isn't the point. Liberal arts colleges focus on learning for learning's sake.

8. Since no one has heard of our school, everything is an inside joke

What even is a Rhodes College?

9. Student opinions matter

The thoughts of the students attending school at a liberal arts college really matter to the faculty and staff. Students have a voice and they aren't afraid to make the school a better place.

10. You feel like you count

There's something comforting in knowing many of the students at your school. In having a professor call your name before you've ever introduced yourself to them. In having the cafeteria staff already have your plate ready because they know your order. Liberal arts colleges form a tight knit community that are not only supportive but inclusive, as well.

Summer: a time (usually) free from school work and a time to relax with your friends and family. Maybe you go on a vacation or maybe you work all summer, but the time off really does help. When you're in college you become super close with so many people it's hard to think that you won't see many of them for three months. But, then you get that text saying, "Hey, clear your schedule next weekend, I'm coming up" and you begin to flip out. Here are the emotions you go through as your best friend makes her trip to your house.

Winter break is over, we're all back at our respective colleges, and the first week of classes is underway. This is a little bit how that week tends to go.

The professor starts to go over something more than the syllabus

You get homework assigned on the first day of class

There are multiple group projects on the syllabus

You learn attendance is mandatory and will be taken every class

Professor starts chatting about their personal life and what inspired them to teach this class

Participation is mandatory and you have to play "icebreaker games"

Everybody is going out because its 'syllabus week' but you're laying in bed watching Grey's Anatomy

Looking outside anytime past 8 PM every night of this week

Nobody actually has any idea what's happening this entire week

Syllabus week is over and you realize you actually have to try now...or not

Now it's time to get back into the REAL swing of things. Second semester is really here and we all have to deal with it.

panera bread

Whether you specialized in ringing people up or preparing the food, if you worked at Panera Bread it holds a special place in your heart. Here are some signs that you worked at Panera in high school.

1. You own so many pairs of khaki pants you don’t even know what to do with them

Definitely the worst part about working at Panera was the uniform and having someone cute come in. Please don’t look at me in my hat.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.
