As if you really needed 10 reasons to go...

1. For the food!

This is the most obvious and unhealthiest reason. Doughnut burgers, deep fried cookie dough, corn dogs, lemonade shake-ups, ice cream, funnel cakes, the list goes on and on. Fair food is the best food and although it’ll clog your arteries and make your pants tighter, it’s too good to pass up. So go and grab a quarter pound corndog and a pineapple whip – your taste buds will thank you.

2. Because the animals are adorable.

From baby cows to hatching chicks to the ducks that slide down the slide, my heart almost explodes (from the cuteness not the calories I just consumed). There are livestock shows and competitions that will make you reminisce on that one time you milked a cow or rode a horse when you were six.

3. All of the free stuff!

If it says “free”, I’m already there! I have walked out with two bags full of free stuff and I turned some people down. Seriously, there’s a ton of freebies and it’s well worth it.

4. Because there's also amazing stuff you can buy.

Besides all of the freebies, there is also a whole building full of things to buy including sweets, yard furniture, purses, clothing, and so much more. It’s impossible to walk out empty handed so make sure to bring some cash.

5. The music tents.

During the fair, you can walk around almost anywhere outside and hear a band playing or someone singing karaoke. There is no shortage of tunes.

6. All of the homemade stuff.

There are so many homemade, hand-crafted things entered into the fair for prizes. Baked goods, beer, quilts, sculptures, paintings, and photography are among the many things you can enter that are judged for prizes. You can take the time to look at who is the best in the state!

7. The concerts!

Not only are there major paid concerts at the fair like Reba and Chris Young and Brett Eldridge, but there is also a “Turf Concert” Series, that features bands and artists like Newsboys, American Authors, and Rachel Platten. There is all kinds of music at the fair!

8. The people.

There is no better place to people watch than the Kentucky State Fair. We all know how diverse the Kentucky population is and that is only proven by the attendance at the Fair. You will see all kinds and every one of them is special.

9. Freddy!

Freddy is a staple of the State Fair, if you’ve never talked to Freddy, your Fair experience was incomplete. Freddy is a gigantic farming doll who literally talks to you. It’s amazing, the kids will be impressed and truthfully, you will be too.

10. The state pride.

Truthfully, Kentuckians love our state and there is no better place to show your love than at the State Fair.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
