Anyone who knows me knows that I ADORE Lilly Singh aka IIsuperwomanII aka Queen of the internet. For those of you who don't know who she is, (have you been living under a rock??) she makes hilarious YouTube videos every week (every Monday and Thursday to be exact, thank you very much). And I started watching her videos when she just had a measly one million subscribers, she's at 10 million now y'all! Why is she so relevant you ask? Well, aside from the fact that she is super humble and her eyeliner is always on point, she is an Indian-Canadian FEMALE creating an empire of her own! Also, she gets major brownie points for being a caring and giving individual.
Growing up as an Indian is no easy feat, growing up as an Indian in the Western part of the world is confusing as hell! You've got that Western culture that reminds you that you're a bit too Indian, you've got your Indian parents (and aunties and uncles) telling you that you are too Western. It's difficult finding an equilibrium. But, it's worse when you strive to be something different than the stereotypical Indian doctor, or pharmacist, or engineer (don't even get me started on what my family had to say about my majoring in Psychology); Lilly continues to break stereotypes that have been stacked up against females, and more importantly, Indian females, all while staying classy and being a positive unicorn at the end of a colorful rainbow (you won't get it if you don't watch her videos). So, now that that ridiculously long intro is over, here are some reasons why Lilly Singh is the literal QUEEN.
1. She doesn't want to be a stereotypical shy desi girl who agrees with everything.
2.Seriously, she isn't afraid to knock some sense into you.
3. She reminds you that you are a capable person (unlike your desi parents who think even the way you breathe is wrong).
4. She perfectly captures your desi mom's not so subtle hints that you're marriage material now.
5. ....I mean REALLY not so subtle hints.
6. When she perfectly imitated your mom yelling at you...again, but you were just trying to help.
7. When she perfectly summed up your desi parents trying to text, or do anything with technology really. LLLOOOLLL!
8. When she wrote a book about her amazing career that she worked hard to create all while shattering stereotypes and glass ceilings and such.
9. When this beautiful, kind, positive Indian graced talk shows with her presence. Paving the path for Brown people in a White industry. You're so lucky Jimmy Fallon! (OK I'm the lucky one to see two of my favorites together, but you get the idea)
10. And this. THIS! Have you heard of her new campaign "Girl Love"? it gives me life!
So there you have it. All jokes aside, I've really looked up to Lilly Singh throughout the years. I'll catch myself at a crossroads wondering if I should give up on something because it will be harder for an Indian female to do it, and every time I think "but I already know of an Indian female whose living a life that so many said was not possible. Keep on slaying Lilly!
