For Better Or For Worse

10 Reasons House Sitting Changed My Life

For most of us in our early twenties, who still live at home, it can be quite annoying at times. The sugar bowl always ends up empty when you need to use it, you wash the dirty dishes for what feels like an army just to get to the one cereal bowl you used the morning before and every time you want to take a shower someone else is always in there. Now before I proceed I want to say that I am one of the lucky ones. I still live at home with my parents and my main responsibilities are paying my own bills. I have no intention of moving out any time soon, not because I am a moocher, but because I would be dumb to move out of a place that doesn't charge me rent. I recently began house sitting for a relative who does an awful lot of traveling for work. My soul responsibilities are taking care of my little meatballs, Arlo and Munchkin. I couldn't have imagined house sitting being what it is to me now, and each month I look forward to my cousin going on his next trip.

  1. THE FREEDOM!

Nothing feels better than waking up on the weekends knowing you have no place to go and basically picking what you want to do each day. You want to sleep in until noon, no Mom or Dad is going to be there peeking thru the door or standing over your bed waiting for any signs of life. No, my friends it is just you, the blankets and the peacefulness of a long awaited weekend.

2.The Serenity of Sweet Silence.

At my house there is no such thing as silence, even the mice have a DJ that plays until the wee hours. Someone is always either yelling, barking, or blasting some form of technology. The shock I went through my first night of house sitting was unsettling, I almost couldn't go to sleep without some sort of noise in the background. I lye their in the deafening silence thinking of what I had been missing.

3.The lack of junk food lying around.

This is my favorite part about house sitting. NO JUNK FOOD. At home there is always junk food, and I have no self control when it comes to ho hos, ding dongs, potato chips or ice cream. So when I am house sitting, there is very little junk food and I LOVE it.

4.Binge watching Netflix.

You want to come home from work and binge watch Netflix until midnight, no one will be there judging you through their darkened lashes.

5. Walking around stark nakie.

NAKED. Yeah that's right naked. You forget your towel in the other room, that is fine, you can wander across the hall to grab it without fear of someone's boyfriend or your father seeing you nakie.

6. The perks of having more than one bathroom.

If and when I ever move out I am going to need more than one bathroom. It is amazing to have a bathroom for every need.

7. The lack of irritation now that everything is in its rightful place.

No more wondering where your favorite mug is or if the leftovers you brought home are still in the fridge. The mug is right where you left it and the leftovers will be there when you get home.

8. Why do people, who live alone, have doors?

This is a serious question. When I house sit I rarely close any of the doors in the house, apart from the front of course.

9. Perhaps a little too much time.

After you have read that book you were dying to read, watched every episode of a 6 season show, or completed all of your homework assignments there is this gaping time in which you have absolutely nothing to do.

10. The epitome of loneliness.

Once you have a little too much time, the loneliness sets in. Where is everyone? Does anyone want to come over?

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
