We've all heard it. "Horseback riding isn't a sport." Well, I've got news for you: Horseback riding is a sport, and, whether you know it or not, it's actually ranked as the most dangerous sport.
Here are 10 reasons why horseback riding is a sport.
1. Leg Day Is Every Day
Your legs better be sticking like glue or else you may just end up with a mouth full of dirt — yum...
2. We're In The Olympics
That's right — we're an Olympic sport
3. When We Fall, We Fall.
Cross Country riders are actually required to wear their medical information on their arm.
4. We Can Burn Seven Calories A Minute
Yes, you heard me — seven calories a minute.
5. You Train For Years Before You Can Compete At A High Level
It takes years upon years to get to the top level of this sport--most don't get to the Grand Prixs until they are in their 30s and 40s — even though they started riding before they could walk.
6. The Horse Does Not Do All Of The Work
Say this to a rider, and prepare to feel the wrath.
7. It Meets The Requirements Of A Sport
There are competitive, athletic and mental components to horseback riding. All of which makes it a sport.
8. You're Controlling A 1,200 Pound Animal
They may be gorgeous, but they're also huge animals.
9. We Don't Have An Off-Season
We ride all year long and in all kinds of weather. Raining? Don't expect your class to be canceled.
10. Our Ball Has A Mind Of Its Own
Last time I checked, a basketball cannot get mad at you, buck you off and potentially step on you.
Horseback riding is, without a doubt, a sport — even if it is not typically thought of as such. Being an Equestrian isn't easy, but I wouldn't trade it (or my horse who I proudly showed off in this list) for anything in the world.
