Fall is rapidly approaching and you all know what that means:
Yes! Halloween is right around the corner. While some wildly anticipate the coming of the holiday season; the gifts, the Christmas lights, the fake Santas, and the nonstop Christmas movie marathons. I am much more excited for the ACTUAL most wonderful time of the year: Halloween. There's so much to love! If you're one of those people who thinks Christmas or Thanksgiving is the best holiday, let me give you 10 reasons why you're wrong. Let's get SPOOKY!
1. The Decorations!
One of the coolest things about Halloween is decorating for the occasion! Spider webs, candy corn lights, skeletons and headstones in the yard are some of my favorite things to put up. It makes everything so much more spooky and exciting and you can leave them up for the whole month of October. Nothing says Halloween better!
2. 'Trick-or-Treat'ing
If you're a kid, this is HANDS DOWN the best part of Halloween. You go door-to-door around your neighborhood and get free candy and all you have to do is say "trick-or-treat"! Sometimes the neighbors even leave bowls out on their front porch and even though the sign says "take one", you know you always take two or more. Then after a couple hours of scavenging, you return to your house and count up all your loot.
3. "Spooky Scary Skeletons"
If somehow you're unaware, "Spooky Scary Skeletons" was part of a short created by Disney in 1929. Not only is it a classic, it is an icon to Halloween lovers everywhere. If you haven't seen it, then honestly how are you alive? Watch it here.
4. Adorable Pet Costumes
I don't know about you but I've had pets my whole life and we've always tried to dress them up in silly Halloween costumes and Christmas sweaters. Unfortunately, they don't quite see the same vision we do. Luckily, I have plenty of friends with pets who are more than happy to dress up for the night. Whether they be spooky or cute, they are always worth looking at, because who doesn't want to see a dog dressed up as Wonder Woman?
5. Haunted Houses
I know what you're thinking, "You can't POSSIBLY enjoy being scared". Okay, you're right. No one should LIKE being scared because that literally goes against all human nature. However, the thrill and rush of adrenaline that you get from walking through a haunted house is invigorating! If you're not much of a haunted house person, you just have to keep in mind that none of the things you're seeing are actually real; however, I don't have any advice about jump scares. BOO!
6. Costumes
It doesn't matter if you're a baby, a teen, an mom/dad, or a grandparent, NO ONE is too old to dress up. Halloween is all about the costumes. There are scary ones, cute ones, funny ones, sets for couples, and a costume for every taste and liking. Even if you can't find one you like in a store, the beauty is that you can make your own, so there is no excuse for not dressing up.
7. Carving Pumpkins
One of the coolest Halloween traditions out there is carving pumpkins. You have so much freedom when doing it and these days, there's a million different things you could do. You could do anything from a basic jack-o-lantern to a detailed rendition of Van Gogh's "Starry NIght". The creativity is in your hands.
8. Halloween-themed Parties
Halloween parties are some of the most extravagant parties of the year! There's decorations, music, costumes, games, alcohol (if you're old enough, of course), and just a solid, fun reason to get together with a big or small group of people and just have a good time. They can be anytime around Halloween but prove to be the most fun on Halloween nights, especially if you've unfortunately outgrown trick-or-treating.
9. Halloween Movies
Halloween movie marathons start about halfway through October and go all the way through to Halloween. The television channel "Freeform" started a tradition called "13 Nights of Halloween", where they start playing Halloween movies in the afternoons for several hours and the length increases as it gets closer and closer to Halloween. They show all sorts of movies, so if you're not into the horror genre as much, they also show movies like "The Goonies" and "Halloweentown" for your personal viewing pleasure. Grab a blanket and a buddy and get ready for those marathons!
10. Getting to Feel Like a Kid
In our busy world, it can be easy to lose track of the good 'ole days. Halloween gives you a chance to go back to those days and enjoy a carefree moment, even just for a little while. The costumes, candy and decorations will leave you longing for your childhood days sooner than you can say "trick-or-treat".
