Attending a small school is very much so what you make of it. If you do attend a small school I would highly recommend getting involved to make the most out of your college years and to leave your mark. Here's just a few pros of getting involved on campus:
1. You get the opportunity to meet people from all different backgrounds.
Athletes, non-athletes, science majors, or art majors, although, you may share differences, joining a club that you're interested in may lead you to different types of people with a common interest.
2. You get to know faculty better.
Joining different clubs and organizations on campus allows you to get to know professors and or coaches in a different light.
3. Networking.
Being a part of a club or organization is something larger than you. Being a member on a sports team and or sorority/ fraternity can connect you to alumni all around the world, opening doors you never could have imagined.
4. Keeps you busy.
Sure, being a full-time student keeps you busy, however, getting involved in different things keeps your days rolling and your nights never ending. The "Go, Go, Go" lifestyle is very trendy on college campuses.
5. It teaches you time management.
Sure, you're busy between practices, class, and study sessions but what's a few more meetings during the week? Having a stacked schedule forces you to stay on task and pushes you to make time for what you need.
7. It teaches you organizational skills.
Lab at 10:00, meeting at 11:30, lunch at 12:00, practice at 4:00, Chapter at 6:00... All these things can pile up. But being busy now and organizing your schedule will give you a greater grip on your life. & believe me when I say your planner during the school year, is pretty much your significant other.
8. You will grow into a natural leader.
You may or may not already be a leader but joining an extracurricular pushes you outside of your comfort zone. Taking certain positions or roles within your organization teaches you leadership skills
9. It builds a community and strengthens school pride.
Clubs and organizations are all about supporting one another. By joining an organization on campus, you are also contributing to the college as a whole.
10. It prepares you for the real world.
Ultimately this is the goal. Isn't the education what's going to prepare me for the real world you might ask? For some that might be all it takes, however, I would argue that simply sitting through 4 years of lectures isn't going to cut it. The people you encounter, the skills you learn, and the experiences you gain through being involved on your campus is really what prepares you for the professional world.
