It has been 13 years since audiences initially fell in love with Dory. And for those of us who remember the experience of seeing "Finding Nemo" in theaters, this has all been long awaited. So it came as no surprise that there were more families and young adults than there were little kids at the showing I went to. And Disney Pixar did not ignore this, in fact it used this knowledge to create a depth that reminded me of last year's Pixar film, "Inside Out".
So here's a few of the profound nuggets of wisdom you might have missed.
**SPOILER ALERTS**
1. The story may have been about trying to find Dory after she swam off to find her family, but in truth, Dory also found herself.
She accepted herself for who she was and became confident in her ability to be on her own.
2. Marlin learns the lesson that words can cut deep.
Nemo keeps his dad accountable for what he said to Dory, and Marlin acknowledges it and later takes the time to give Dory uplifting words instead.
3. The characters in the film represent a wide range of abilities, showing off Disney Pixar's inclusive side.
From the brain injured Bailey, to the near-sighted Destiny, to Dory herself who has short-term memory loss.
4. The "Just Keep Swimming" mantra is back, with a strong message to back it up.
When Hank wants to give up, Dorey refuses, remembering that her parents told her to always try again because there's always a way.
5. Marlin and Nemo learn that you can't always overthink it, sometimes you have to take a risk.
They started asking themselves what would Dory do?
6. Dory's parents remind her that "You can do anything you put your mind to."
After following the shell trail home, Dory's determination proves she can do anything.
7. Dory realizes family isn't just blood relatives.
When she talks about Marlin and Nemo to her parents, she finds their connection is stronger than friendship.
8. Showing love and affection through a loving touch is valued and encouraged.
Dory and her family unapologetically do so, and they even use snuggling and cuddling to save Marlin and Nemo from the truck heading to Cleveland.
9. Dory shows Hank that it's not fun to live life in a "glass box," all safe and comfortable.
Life is meant to be more adventurous!
10. When Marlin and Dory are enjoying the view at the end, worried Marlin looks at carefree Dory in awe.
Marlin sees how Dory doesn't let her forgetfulness hold her back from enjoying and living life to the fullest. And he finds himself, once again, learning a much-needed lesson about letting go.
