10 Reasons Penn Staters Should Get Excited For School Again

Getting ready for school brings a feeling of hatred for the end of the summer, but a sense of excitement as to the future of a new school year. Going back to Penn State is something to be treasured, because the time during college goes by so quickly. Throughout the summer, you have the beach and time with your hometown friends. However, now you have freedom and endless possibilities.

1. Penn State Football.

Our first game is September 3rd against Temple. What is a better way to get ready for the upcoming semester then to begin our home game series with a long-standing rivalry? Answer, there is none.

For all you "Bachelorette" lovers out there lets not forget that Coach Franklin invited the newly engaged couple, JoJo and Jordan, to attend the game.

2. Sylly Week.

A week of non-stop fun and the beginning of the semester. There is no better way to kick off adulthood again than a week of contemplating going to classes and spending time outdoors in front of Old Main.

3. Waffle Shop.

I love being reunited with my favorite food place! You know, those ones that take your hard earned tips from working over the summer. I wouldn't want to wait in a 45 minute line for carbs at any other place.

4. Goodbye parents, hello freedom.

There is something so much better about living in a gross apartment rather than a fine home. Weird, huh? You are so used to living on your own and with your friends that coming back to home is too much of a change and combustion can occur. Honestly, ordering Wings Over and Bagel Crust and living off of pre-made meals at McClanahan's is a much better time.

5. Saving gas money.

Thank goodness for small blessings and big college towns. Mostly everything is in walking distance, aside from the occasion trip to Walmart. The amount of gas money saved during the year is not only astonishing, but also can be put to much better use during the school year.

6. Finally having 10x more clothes.

No longer will you be serving ice cream on your Friday night because you will be getting all dressed up to go out with your friends. On Saturday? You will be doing the same thing. Maybe you will take some time off and go to the movies with your friends or do something adventurous, but no matter what your boring weekends at home are a thing of the past.

8. New Pledge Class.

Seeing the seniors go made most people cry, mostly because they were amazing. However, this new pledge class has to fill their spots and then some. Watching a new pledge class come though Old Main is the funniest and most entertaining thing seen to date. Watching the new pledge class become immersed into your sorority is satisfying, humbling, and makes you have faith in the process.

9. Reuniting.

High school friends and hometown friends are super cool and definitely hold a special place in everyone's heart and have become part of the family. However, college friends are family from the start and now that you have lived with them for so long it is hard to function without them.

10. Finding the newest trends.

Yes, Penn State is in the middle of no where Pennsylvania.

Yes, Pennsylvania stores always seem to be behind on trends.

Thankfully, the Penn State students have some of the trendiest clothes around. Ditching your summer shorts, t-shirt, and flip-flop outline for the newest trend is always a great way to start the new semester.

Why wait for the trend when Penn State starts the trends?

10 Signs You Work In A Restaurant

There's always chaos in the restaurant business.

10 Signs You Work In A Restaurant
Brisanis

Working in the restaurant industry is possibly the most fundamentally challenging occupation I have ever experienced when it comes to hospitality and customer service. When you go to a five-star restaurant you expect the time of your life, a two hour getaway, a walk through another time period (rustic Italy, France, Spain, etc), or simply a honeymoon undergo. What you don't see are the behind the scenes scut work: carrying trays, polishing glassware and silverware, kitchen chaos, the list is endless. Now, I'm not saying being a host, server, or bartender is the worst thing in the whole wide world, there are definitely worse things. But the fact of the matter is that it isn't always sunshine and rainbows. In the two years that I have spent in restaurant and customer service, I have spoken my share of expletives, yelled at kitchen staff, and dealt with not-so-happy guests. It isn't easy to keep a bright and shiny smile on your face when all you want to do is choke every person who walks near you. Anyone who has spent even two weeks working in a restaurant understands the rigor and stress that comes with it. Restaurant culture is a tiny world in and of itself that operates on its own principles and creates its own society. It even has its own language. The sayings "runner", "corner", and "on a bus" wouldn't make sense to anyone otherwise. My mother and I both work in a restaurant and the best advice I can give someone going out to eat is to treat us like people. Yes...believe it or not we are people, people. Say "please" and "thank you", or stack your cleared plates before a busser gets to the table. Trust me, the gesture goes a lot farther than you may think.

So, if you work in a restaurant, you can relate with the following points. If not, check out how the brain of a restaurant service (or any customer service) worker actually works. See if you can identify any crazy weird habits your friends have a tendency to partake in.

One of the scariest things we will ever face in our life is going to college. Many of us move away to a new town, join new organizations, and make new friends. We are expected to study, have a social life, relationships, maybe work, and be healthy. It seems pretty easy to do, and in high school all we wanted to do was graduate and move on to this next chapter of our lives. If you are in high school, here are some things that you can learn from before you get to college. If you have already been through your freshman year of college, hopefully you can relate to the things I have learned in college.
