10 Reasons Having a Crush is Actually the Worst

Because no one really knows what they're actually doing, do they?

Everyone always talks about how wonderful having a crush is; the butterflies when you see them, the excitement whenever you hear their name, the cute little sparks you feel when their hand accidentally brushes yours.

But no one ever talks about how much having a crush sucks... Until now.

1. You can't tell if they're just being nice or if they're flirting.

Your crush: I like your hair!

You: Yeah, but like... like-like?

2. Their name is the only word in your vocabulary.

You: So did I tell you about the super cute thing that ____ did today?

Your friend: *exaggerated eye roll and groan*

3. The way your friends freak out every time you're together.

You: *passes your crush in the hallway*

Your friend: Oh my god, you two are sooooo cute together!

4. You realize you can't flirt for sh*t.

Your crush: I'm totally craving Taco Bell today.

You: Taco Bell gives me diarrhea. *internal screaming*

5. When they compliment/touch you, you can't focus on anything else.

Your crush: *brushes your hand by accident*

You: I am never washing my hand again.

6. You constantly compare them to your past significant other.

You: Oh my god, they said that thing that sounds like what ____ used to say. *panics*

7. You feel insecure about everything you do.

You: *sitting next to them* Am I breathing too loud? Like, can they hear me breathing right now? Do I smell bad? Did I put on deodorant this morning?

8. You change your routine.

You: well, I saw them walk down this hallway once like 6 months ago, so I'll go this way. Who cares if I'm late to class?

9. Stalking their social media is a dangerous minefield.

You: *realizes you've made it back to 2011* Don't. Like. Anything. Don't. Do. It.

10. When you unexpectedly run into them and look like actual garbage.

You: *wearing sweatpants and a stained shirt from 4 years ago, you haven't showered* *sees them* *literally hides in the nearest available place*

Now that we can agree on all the reasons that having a crush is the worst, it's time to put your awkward self out there. Because there's always a chance that they will feel the same way about you.

Parks and Recreation excitedly gathered around a laptop at a table in an office setting.

The library. Club lib. The place every college student goes when they want to try and be a productive member of society. Who better to explain your experience than Parks and Rec?

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
